ph00t's Favorite's 2/18 - 3/4

Our staff member ph00tbag (AKA Sonic Rainboom) wanted to give a shout out to 10 special tracks this week. We’d love it if you gave them a listen!! Don’t forget that faving and reblogging is key to keeping our features going. Now after that plea, here they are:

Pivot - Raining Nightfall

Now this is dubstep. The melodies are subtle, bass dominates the mix. There's a focus on atmosphere and vibe that many artists thes days really don't ever try to execute. Pivot not only maintains a high level of intensity here, but he does so while staying true to dubsteps roots.

AshenFlash - Disparity

This track is nostalgia heaven. The synth design is all-out 80's. There's a strong feel of Kraftwerk inspirations here, and that is wonderful. The vocoder on the vocals helps give the tune its cold, made-by-robots feel. That cold and emotionless feel of the tune adds to the sense that Manehatten is sucking out Coco's soul.

Ponyshpere - Journey through the Everfree

Ponysphere brings us an acoustic journey through the Everfree Forest here. Of late, the Everfree has become a less intimidating place within the show canon (which seems to have a thematic appropriateness seen along with the development the cast has taken). In keeping with that, this tune is much less foreboding than one would expect for a tune about the Everfree. It's almost soothing--certainly a tune to put on in the background while writing.

Flyghtning - Deep Everfree Forest

Flyghtning wows yet again with his spacey and trippy sound design. It's so hard to impart what is so cool about Flyghtning's stuff. The musicality of his cutoff modulation is some of the most subtle, and yet most impactful of any artist in the fandom, bar none.

3SPIRIT - Loyal

I've wanted to shout-out 3SPIRIT for some time. He's a pretty solid and prolific producer, and probably deserves more recognition than he gets. Unfortunately, he more often than not makes House, which I don't care for. But this time around he has some banging uplifting trance for us. The difference is subtle, but pretty important for me.

Curious Cold - Restless Filly

Restless Filly takes its time getting to where it's going. A lot of what makes the tune so good, however, is that it is so understated. Once the vocal samples are out of the way, the tune starts to pick up the pace a little bit, and Curious Cold's guitar work takes front and center. The solo is, appropriately, dreamlike, tying in perfectly with the tune's surreal atmosphere.

ShinZm feat. AphexAngel - For my Dream (I am Bound)

AphexAngel's name reminds me of Aphex Twin, so I have to respect that. It's completely unrelated to this tune, since we're listening to some rock and roll here. Thankfully, the tune stands pretty well on its own. Its safe to say songs about Scootaloo's struggle with her disability are never in short supply, but ShinZm and AphexAngel stand out every time the chorus hits.

Retrotype - Starting Over

Retrotype is always doing unexpected things, and never sacrifices the quality of the tune to do it. It's hard to overstate how difficult that is. The Reese bass that drops in the chorus of Starting Over knocked me for a loop, because it was so incongruous to the tune's established feel, but if it had been any other way, it would not have been quite the same tune at all. This is why Retrotype is one of my favorite brony musicians.

Def-Poni DJ - Luna's Dream

Hardstyle. Pony Hardstyle. I won't pretend it hasn't been done, but most of it has managed to escape my gaze. This is unfortunate, because the stuff is so much fun. The crowd noises, the dirty acid sweeps, the hoover grooves, they're all there. Def-Poni also uses show samples to manage tension perfectly. The lead itself sounds like a tune out of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, which is icing on the cake. Basically, this is a great tune for EDM nerds like me.

Loony Spectre - Bats (Metal Cover)

In general, you should go check out Loony Spectre's stuff. The week before this tune, he also made a CMC theme cover that was just about as close to an authoritative verstion of the tune we'll ever have until Hasbro releases the fabled "good version" that Daniel Ingram recorded (get on it, Hasbro). This tune, though, is just plain phenomenal. It wouldn't be remotely out of place in a BATS rock opera. Actually, a BATS rock opera wouldn't be a bad idea either.
