Ran across two interesting quotes in this article about Sally Struthers theorizing that Rory actually got knocked up by a zombified Cary Grant:
Okay, so this is nothing new to long-time fans. ASP was always working towards destroying Rory's future and making her repeat her mother's missteps, proving that it doesn't matter how hard Lorelai tried to parent differently, that the same thing would always happen. However isn't this further proof that her ending really, really, really sucks? If the boyfriends have no effect on Rory and the circumstances never change and this is always going to happen no matter what, what was the point? ASP's refusal to believe in character development is a narrative dead end and very unsatisfying. It's terrible writing.
I won't even say that she should have adapted her ending to fit the characters as they evolved (which I do think the HIMYM writers should have done) because for the most part they didn't and Rory becoming increasingly reckless, aimless, and confused (and less sympathetic) seems a deliberate choice. ASP was always determined to drag that girl into the gutter eventually.
On to another subject:
I am very curious how the idea got spread around that Milo was at all open to a Literati romantic reunion or that a AYITL sequel with a Rory/Jess plotline was discussed as something that was imminently going to happen until about 2021. Milo not only downplays the possibility in every single interview but he outright says that Jess has moved on, is happy with his life, and does not need to revisit his high school romance. I was told for years that Milo couldn't wait to film this Literati happy ending once This Is Us was over. How did people come up with this impression when he seems to contradict it, over and over?
And no, you don't need to know every single interview he's ever done but his answers have been so consistent over the years I do wonder how it was misinterpreted so broadly. We all know ASP would fuck it up anyway, so any Literati happy ending is best left to the imagination, I think.
(Matt Czuchry, for his part, felt a lot more positively about his character than the Palladinos did and rooted for the Rogan ship to work things out. I don't think Amy would allow that, either).
