i HATE that line too!! you explained it really well -- harmon was always hedging character development, keeping jeff at "horny frat boy" status. i always assume he was afraid to let jeff's character mature past his own (sorry dan!! i <3 you, but if the shoe fits!!). so we had to live with the jeff that he was comfortable writing ... drinking, being pretty gross, never progressing ... :-(

i feel deep sympathy for the dark place dan harmon was obviously in while writing the sixth season of community, but i also kinda resent it? oops.
