NEW MUSIC:

Gerard Way’s new single, “Here Comes the End,” appeared in the second season trailer for The Umbrella Academy, which premieres on July 31st. He went on to release the full track, featuring vocalist Judith Hill, later that day.

The Pretty Reckless’ Taylor Momsen revealed additional information about when the band plans to release their next album. So far, Death By Rock and Roll will feature Rage Against the Machine‘s Tom Morello and members of Soundgarden.

Super Whatevr and Blink-182‘s Mark Hoppus joined forces on the former band’s new single “Carhartts & Converse.” Hoppus also serves as a co-writer on the new track.

Into It. Over It. returned with a new single titled “Living Up to Let You Down,” the first song off of his upcoming album Figure. This marks his first full-length release in four years, following 2016’s Standards.

TOUR ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Underoath announced a livestream concert series, Underoath: Observatory, which will begin this Friday. The band will play three shows dedicated to a different album, the first being Lost in the Sound of Separation.

Shiragirl’s Shira Yevin revealed a new performance platform, Gritty Rocks Live, which will livestream its first showcase of women artists. The virtual tour features female artists across eight cities, playing in various capacities.

We Came as Romans revealed new rescheduled dates for 2021 with The Devil Wears Prada, Gideon and Dayseeker. The band were previously forced to postpone their To Plant a Seed anniversary tour due to coronavirus.

OTHER NEWS:

After postponing three times, Yellowcard’s $15 million infringement lawsuit against late rapper Juice WRLD resumes this month. The lawsuit’s previous postponement was due to coronavirus, preventing the search for an executor.

Netflix announced that The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is being canceled after season 4. The show originally aired on the CW alongside Riverdale before moving to the streaming platform.

Poppy confirmed on social media that she and rapper Ghostemane are now engaged. Last Thursday, the singer and YouTuber shared a photo on Instagram of her engagement ring.

In a now-deleted tweet, Paramore revealed that all proceeds from a new Black Lives Matter poster would be donated to the NAACP and Color of Change. Following backlash from fans, the band has since removed the item from their store.

Following its event cancellation, San Diego Comic Con is now hosting virtual events for Comic-Con@Home, including a new panel hosted by Gerard Way. The panel, titled “Dark Horse All-Stars,” will also feature Nnedi Okorafor and Matt Kindt.

Review: Shiragirl return and they aren't holding back in new single 'Antisocial Media'

Los Angeles four-piece Shiragirl have been biting back in music since way back in 2010. This all-female band are best known for their presence at the heavily male-dominated Warped Tour as well as setting up female-led platform Gritty In Pink to cater to women in the music industry. It's without a doubt these strong women are pathing the way for the future generations of music, as they strive towards reaching gender equity and empowering women through performances, partnerships and networking opportunities.

Since releasing their EP 'Andi Underground' back in 2019, we've been expectantly awaiting their comeback and they certainly haven't disappointed. Their newly dropped single after such a long hiatus is the exceptional 'Antisocial Media', putting an important message right in the face of their listeners that's impossible to ignore.

'Antisocial Media' instantly delves in with a gritty guitar riff and a simplistic drum beat easy to get hooked on. Blending spoken-sung elements, lead singer Shira carries herself with an air of edginess and unapologetic candidness as she looks to make a difference with each and every word she angrily professes. It's hard not to love every moment of this single, with just under 3 minutes crammed full of thunderingly raw guitar, angsty vocals and an absolutely shredding guitar solo at the bridge. Their crude instrumental style perfectly coincides with their unfiltered and angsty persona and makes not only 'Antisocial Media' a track to remember, but Shiragirl as a whole are impossible to forget.

From a group who aren't afraid to speak their mind, 'Antisocial Media' follows in suit of their brashness with a complete dissection of the digital world we envelop our lives in. With repetitive lines like 'follow me, like me, tag me, share me' they brilliantly express the over-consumption and obsession for social media that humans have developed, yearning for the boost of serotonin that comes with each new interaction online. 'If I don't get a thousand likes, I won't sleep tonight' speaks for itself on how people's self-worth and judgement of others has slowly began to seep into numbers on a screen that determine absolutely nothing. This social commentary is eloquently written, paired with a performance that doesn't hold back from making sure you hear every single word.

Frontwoman Shira explains more behind the statement they portray in 'Antisocial Media', "It's our first original release since the pandemic, a time when social media allowed us to stay connected to others, but also ruled our lives in ways that undoubtedly affected us psychologically. We like to poke fun at our generation's social media obsessions, but at the same time we also have serious concerns; we want to inspire people to examine their relationship to these addictive platforms, encourage self-awareness, and question how it influences mental health.”

If all of this wasn't enough, the track comes alongside a music video that makes just as much of a statement as the lyrics. Flicking between the glossy and romanticised side of social media and the more grim undertones of mental health issues, this video is in your face with the realities of an online world that never paints the full picture.

Absolutely filled to the brim with hard-hitting lyrics and thrilling instrumentals, it's hard to pick out the most poignant lines or describe the thrill of each hook without simply recommending you spin the whole track yourself here. Shiragirl are certainly a group deserving of your support, with their determination and drive they're sure to succeed.
