Queer Book Character Tournament Round Two
Murderbot- The Murderbot Diaries
An Zhe- Little Mushroom
Character, book, and author names under the cut
I can't believe I have to function like a normal person in the society tomorrow and not talk about how a story about a little mushroom made me ugly cry last night
He was done for. There remained only one offense that he possibly could have committed. What charge would cover the making a mannequin of the Arbiter? As An Zhe felt self-loathing for not carefully looking at the base's laws before, he strove to find the correct words. Mannequin, a mannequin used for that kind of bad purpose— The words Lu Feng said to Josh when they were downstairs popped up in his mind. In despair, An Zhe said, "… Indecency?" He saw a shadow of a smile appear in Lu Feng's eyes. "Have you looked at the base's laws before?" "I haven't." Lu Feng said, "Come here." An Zhe took a step forward. "Hold out your hand." An Zhe obediently held out his hand. Lu Feng's words were still clipped. In the same commanding tone, he said, "Put it up here." "Where?" "On me." An Zhe hesitated for a moment, then slowly placed his hand on the left side of Lu Feng's chest. The uniform's silver buttons and the badge pinned to his chest were all cold and had lines decorating their surfaces. He didn't know why Lu Feng wanted him to do this. Click. The icy silver handcuff was clipped onto An Zhe's wrist once more. Lu Feng was expressionless. "For indecency."
– Little Mushroom, Chapter 7
The cover art for Volume 1 of Seven Seas' English translation of Little Mushroom by Yi Shi Si Zhou, with art by Ruthie (kkcoocool) and kKEN, and translation by Yu and amixy is up, and Volume 1 is up for pre-order:
It will be two volumes long, like the Peach Flower House English translation was. Volume 1 releases August 4, 2026 (the release was pushed back). In 2025, Seven Seas said it was also releasing as an ebook: "Ebook editions will also be available on digital platforms."
"In a near-future world, humans and non-humans alike must endure in a world that wants them dead. The fan-favorite danmei (Boys’ Love) novels return with an all-new translation and illustrations!
In a future Earth ravaged by radiation, the Northern Base is one of humanity’s last bastions of survival—and that survival depends on keeping nonhuman life forms out at all costs.
An Zhe, a mushroom disguised as a human, knows that stepping foot in the Northern Base is risking instant extermination. But he has no choice: The humans have taken his spore, and he is instinctually driven by the need to reclaim it.
His mission depends on passing flawlessly as a human. While An Zhe is able to fool the Base’s advanced technology, he’s unlucky enough to have caught the keen eye of the handsome but merciless Judge—a man licensed to kill to keep the Northern Base safe from parasites and invaders. Can An Zhe survive under the watch of those beautiful eyes?
Each deluxe hardcover release of the award-winning novel features special embellishments: a dust jacket featuring all-new art, a new illustration against the hardcover itself, and beautiful printed edges."
Seven Seas is aware of the issue with how An Zhe's name is spelled without a space on the example summary, and is already fixing it. The previews shown are just samples, not the final version (before noticing it, the typo was also on their webpage ("Anzhe"), but has since been fixed). Update: The name will be spelled "Anzhe" as per translation decision.
The manhua adaptation English translation is being published physically by Aloha Comics, and they are up to Volume 3:
The manhua is ongoing on Kuaikan in Chinese.
I love a (well foreshadowed) plot twist as much as the next person but I also really love about a story you know from the very outset is a tragedy. I'm not talking about Romeo and Juliet or The Titanic or The Song of Achilles where they're famous for being a tragic (or based on a famous story where everyone knows the ending), I'm talking about the books where the tone is set to be a tragedy so clearly from the beginning but you just don't know how yet.
have an incomplete list ive complied
Little Mushroom by Shisi (it's just so dystopian and just keeps getting worse to the point where a happy ending would be so out of line with the story, even though I would call the ending pretty happy)
The Daughter's War by Christopher Buehlman (it goes all in on just how gd gruesome and nonsensical war can be. I knew the whole time is was going to be a slaughter, i was mostly trying to guess who might survive)
Angels Before Men by Rafael Nicolás (it's a retelling of Lucifer's fall so you know that he's going to fall at the end, but how? what pushes the sweet, shy angel in the beginning to that point? i read this whole thing with a pit in my stomach)
When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi (maybe this is cheating bc it is famous and a tragedy, but it's clear from page 1 that he dies and the slow spiral there was incredibly painful)
Blood Over Bright Haven by ml wang (so I actually didn't see it coming at all but my friend tells me it was damn obvious from halfway through so I'll take her word for it. Sciona literally tells the audience, albeit indirectly, what she is going to do and you have to wait in sick anticipation to see if she'll follow through)
The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson (this one is an odd one because some people see it and some don't. all i can say is that the entire book the reader constantly doubts Baru's loyalties to everyone, even to herself, and it's incredibly stressful)
Nothing in this world lasted forever.
Little Mushroom Revelations
My bookshelf plus my humble danmei corner.
More books (hopefully 😅) in the future...
