In For a Penny, in For a Pound AU where Mensah's like wow. Wow. Alright. How many of these people can we afford to fucking buy? We can work out a system to help them escape in other ways later but there's no fucking way I'm leaving this station with this much money in my account and not using it to help free slaves. There is no way I am leaving people here to this cruelty if I have the ability to help them.
And then instead of just treating Murderbot like it's a special exception and More Deserving of Freedom Than Other Enslaved People...she buys not only Murderbot, but as many other fucking SecUnits as the Preservation Alliance's Survey Fund can afford.
Because if these people aren't going to be setting up stealthy ways to help free enslaved people, (or you know, ever thinking about the other enslaved people at all from this moment on, ever) they can at least throw their fucking money at the problem until they run out of money. They're from Planet Socialism. It's not like they fucking need it.
It's really not okay how Murderbot is being treated like an exception rather than the norm. It's one thing for Murderbot to not give a shit about other enslaved people (and yes, that's also bad), it's another thing entirely for Martha Wells to just...not do anything about it through other characters and other factions.
Why, in 4.5, doesn't Mensah ever think about any of the other enslaved people they all left behind? The ones who were killed?
When will this series start caring about enslaved people even when they aren't the protagonist?
