PAIRING: Tommy/Grace NO WARNINGS. Shitty little thing that just vomited itself onto the page. I'm sleep deprived so it'll suck. Still, here it is.

ALMOST Tommy asked Grace to dance, and he had almost smiled.

"What's that for?" Grace smirked, nodding at Tommy's outstretched hand. He'd returned to the Garrison, soaked from the rain wearing his undershirt beneath an unbuttoned coat, and he had almost smiled.

"Dance." Tommy said, one eyebrow rising slightly. When Grace made the same expression back, Tommy raised his eyebrow up even futher, and he had almost smiled.

"There's no music, Thomas. And that is not how you ask a lady to dance," Grace's affronted expression was feined and exaggerated. Tommy dropped his hand, held it out again in expactly the same way, and he had almost smiled.

"I don't see the problem?" Tommy widened his eyes. "I think you're too particular. Nice girls from Ireland, like you, aren't used to boys from the Lanes asking them to dance." Grace giggled, and he had almost smiled.

"So ask me like the boys from the Lanes do when they're trying to impress Nice girls from Ireland." Grace straightened her back in the seat, to emulate an official Lady, and he had almost smiled.

"Right," Tommy cleared his throat. "Grace Burgess, from Galway, will you dance with me?" He held out his hand a third time. Grace smiled softly and placed her hand in his, and he had almost smiled.

"There's still no music, Thomas." Grace said, and he had almost smiled.

"You'll 'ave to sing." Tommy said, and Grace's face had lit up like a church candle. They got to their feet together, their hands remaining linked, and once face to face Tommy wrapped his free arm around Grace's slight back. She drew herself close to his body, and he had almost smiled.

Grace found herself unable to find the right thing to befit the mood. Holding her hand softly on Tommy's sodden coat, with her body pressed to his equally soaked undershirt, she found them swaying without it, anyway. Her eyes were mesmerised by his, and she smiled so brightly she broke into a giggle, and he had almost smiled.

Tommy pulled her closer, looking for all the world like he might just kiss her. Drawn to him, Grace had almost kissed him.
