ah… oops, I’ve already watched more than halfway through the movie personally, the reason I decided to start on that...
I sort of understand what you're saying, but the main reason I strongly suggest to not skip ahead to any of the serious arcs is because there are quite a few things that happen in between arcs that become important later. For example, Takasugi shows up before the Benizakura arc and that's when you meet Gengai as well. Both important characters in various arcs. Gengai in particular because you learn about his motivations and how he comes to know the group, and why exactly he's important to them or why they're important to him. Not to mention that revelations that happen in later arcs make his relationship to other characters a bit more involved, but if you skipped ahead to Benizakura then you wouldn't know that.
In most serious arcs the characters will have been previously introduced and their involvement in the plot is already known. Skipping to the Benizakura arc means you also missed the arc about Umibouzu which mentions Kagura's life and talks a bit about the Yato culture. I believe it's also the first mention you get of Kamui. All very important history. The movie actually spoils Kamui a bit because he wasn't originally in the arc, he doesn't show up in the actual show until a while later, and his reveal is one of the biggest parts of the whole arc.
You don't know anything about Katsura or how his and Gintoki's relationship started out a bit strained because they hadn't seen each other in years. It adds to their interactions in the Benizakura arc.
The comedy episodes, and the smaller slice of life arcs are the flavoring and history that add to the story. The blind villain Nizou? This isn't the first time we've seen him. Same goes with the Harusame pirates. Those guys both appeared much earlier in their own arc. It makes their reappearance more interesting. I know the series starts off slow, but the biggest appeal of the show that sets it apart from other action series is that these people are just like us, and the episodes in between show them being dorks, assholes, idiots, perverts, brats, lazy, gluttonous, etc. I think that skipping the stuff in between is like squirting all the filling out of a twinky and just eating the bread. The way I felt slapped in the face by the benizakura arc is something that you can't recreate. The way my heart pounded when Gintoki got stabbed was worth the wait because I didn't know it was coming. I had to pause to take a breather because it felt so much more intense. It's impossible to get that same impact if you haven't gotten the build up.
The only episodes I recommend skipping are the first 2 because they're filler, and the 3rd episode is the actual start, the same as the manga. The 2nd movie shoulds also be saved for the end because the emotional impact of the second movie is minuscule compared to if you've watched whole series. I'm telling you, watching the series before watching the second movie is important. You don't get the same feeling watching the scene of Harry Potter sacrificing himself in the last book if you haven't read the rest of the series.
You're probably finished the movie already, but I suggest going back and watching the show from the start (that includes watching the actual Benizakura arc because the movie leaves some stuff out and changes a few things. It's acts much better as a supplement because of the different animation and the few extra scenes).
It takes a while to hit it's stride, so it might seem tedious at first, but I'm someone who hates comedy series, and I still love watching every episode, because I never fell in love with the action or the drama, I fell in love when Gintoki gave a huge speech about the truth of strawberrry milk, or when Kagura got Sadaharu and was so unbelievably happy because as a Yato it was hard for her to find a pet that she couldn't accidentally kill with her strength. When Shinpachi showed he was a huge fan of Otsuu and was the official leader of the Otsuu fan club. The moment Gintoki and Hijikata first met and it was the first time Gintoki drew a sword. Little things about the characters themselves, like why Yato carry umbrellas, that Gintoki is afraid of ghosts, even Catharine has an important introduction that fleshes out her character and adds depth to her stories.
I guess I just don't want anybody to miss those moments that bring Gintama to life.
shizaah replied to your post “umineko can get a bit confusing sometimes because you can get stuff...”
in umineko, logic and common sense do not exist
