hello!~ I have a friend that is toxic and despite my efforts, I can't get them to leave me alone. My parents think they are a good influence, but they continue to ask me out when I'm not interested and I feel they are just generally toxic. How do I get them to back off without being too harsh? I don't want to seem rude to them and I hate getting into arguments and such. Should I delete them off of social median and just stop talking to them at all?? Many thanks, and happy Easter!!

I am so sorry that this has been sitting in the box for a while. Hopefully we’re still a little relevant to the situation at hand!

If this friend is being toxic to you, they either deserve to know, or to be cut out. There is nothing wrong with doing either. You can mention to the friend that “Hey, maybe we should scale back a bit cause you’re making me feel very uncomfortable in our friendship.” which would likely warrant a discussion... which could help, and provide a sense of understanding to the friend about how you’re feeling.

If you do cut them off of social media, you may have some explaining to do. I don’t see a problem in doing that now if that is something that would make you feel more comfortable  and safer. That’s completely up to you. and if they’re truly that toxic, that may be the best first step.

As for your parents, have you spoken to them about the way that this friend treats you? You should probably mention to them that you’re not really interested in remaining this person’s friend anymore, especially if they seem to like them.
