Day 10 -   Footwear impressions can tell us about both the criminal and the crime. 

Footwear impressions may be able to determine the make and style of shoe, and even the identity of the shoe to the exclusion of all others in the world. We can even use these impressions to rule out certain shoes and narrow the suspect pool.

Footwear evidence can be found at almost all crime scenes in two forms, impressions and prints. 

Impressions: Imprints or prints left behind by fingerprints, shoes, tires, etc. 

Prints are collected by placing an adhesive paper or contact paper, adhesive side down, over the impression in dust or light dirt and smoothing it over.

Wear: An imprint or print whose physical features are altered over time. 

The recovery process for prints is the same, only using fingerprint lifting tapes and suitable contrast backgrounds to place the lift on.

However, NEVER cover an impression with tape to reserve it until after photographing them as it will obliterate the print and make subsequent enhancement difficult. Use it as a last resort!
