FRESH STREAM: FOODMAN - "SHOKUHIN"
Self-described “Track maker” Shokuhin Maturi a.k.a. Foodman put out some of the internet’s best secrets this year. His engagement with the (admittedly engaging) wave of made-in-Japan footwork sprung some of the more out-there variations on the Chicago sound. However, the standout release from his 2013 catalog might be Shokuhin, a cassette/digital release from Orange Milk Records that carries more emotional, reflective weight than some of his other abstract genre experiments.
On Shokuhin, Maturi accomplishes a plunderphonic, collage-type chaos out of relative simplicity. Each track has very few voices. Even more surprisingly, many sounds don’t sound overly manipulated. Maturi might be more interested in a psychedelia accomplished by montage and super-imposition rather than over-bearing post-production and a heavy reliance on effects.
This kind of organic, attentive approach makes Shokuhin a surprisingly invigorating listen. Approachable, dense but not impenetrable, and awkwardly danceable, Foodman’s sound is an exciting one to witness on the digital horizon. Stream the album in full below.
