training
today was the usual martial arts/boxing stuff. started off warming up with biking, mobility, running, and footwork drills. Then jumped straight to drills with some of my training buddies. Tra(kyokushin),bullet(shorin ryu karate/freestyle),shon(wrestling shorin ryu karate),Eric(boxing),and a new guy named antonio were there.
I jumped straight to drilling with Eric. Basic 1-2-3 combos, we would switch off between each other. Did that for around 3-5 minutes, then after that went with shon. WE started off same. basic 1-2′s, 1-2-3′s. But then eventually started building on top of that, we would do different defensive maneuvers, add counters etc. After that we would do intercepting punch drills, where we would time specific punches with 2-3 move counters.Trying to get used to interrupting peoples combos, punching inbetween punches if you will. That was really good stuff. Then afterwards we did pressure drills. Where we would put forward rushing pressure on each other(lots of pushing and shoving), and the other person would have to neutralize it someway(btw shon is 400 lbs and incredibly powerful, so this was hard af). I would use a lot of angled and circular moving with lots of flurries of punches to the body, even would do bits of clinching and stuffing the pressure to slow him down, so more of a boxing approach if you will. the next few rush downs we added basic front punches, to up the anti. I switched from a boxing approach to a more karate based approach and did lots of redirecting, open hand blocks, etc to slow the momentum. It was incredibly tiring, but its so good. It really helps push the cardio, strengthen and harden your body. Even when your applying pressure to the other person they are hitting your body/limbs(no headshots) at full force so it def toughens you up. After that did basic kickboxing and some freestyle striking sparring with Tra, bullet, and anotonio. Tbh after dealing with shon for the better part of an hour, dealing with everyone else was very easy. Antonio is a wingchun/muay thai dude. Very interesting combo, very good at mixing the rolling punches of wingchun with more boxing/MT straight punches along with elbows, and kicks. He wasnt very physically powerful, easily coulda just applied more strength and overwhelm, but I kept it light so we could match up tech/skill. He’s really good. Overall great session.
