I let a breath out of my nose as I snuck around the tree my gun drawn. I heard Steve’s voice through the coms.
“Stay back until I give the signal.” I looked to him and nodded. The suspect was in a warehouse that we had thoroughly surrounded. Steve looked to me and nodded “Go.” We all moved forward carefully.
Steve and I took the west entrance. I stood to the side while Steve moved to open the door. Before he could move the door swung open hitting him in the face. He fell back as the suspect ran forward. He made towards the forest, I looked to Steve before taking off after him.
“He’s heading north!” I shouted through the coms. I heard Steve groan.
“Don’t go after him alone!” Steve growled. I didn’t listen and ran into the brush keeping my eyes on him. The warehouse wasn’t far from town. Which in my mind was surprising. He shot out of the woods with me on his tail. A car swerved to avoid hitting me. I threw my hand up in a quick apology. I watched as he dove through a crowd of people.
“5-0! Get out of the way.” People screamed and scattered as I chased after him. He reached the end of the strip mall looking for any way of escape. He snatched a girl from her mom. I watched as a look of fear spread across her face. She struggled against his grip. He shoved the barrel of a gun against her forehead. I looked at the girl. She couldn’t be any older than Grace.
“Move and I blow her brains out!” He yelled, Someone was holding the mother of the girl back. I swallowed. It was up to me. I heard cars screech to a halt behind me. He would feel more threatened if there was more than just me.
“Stand down.” I said to though the coms.
“Are you insane!” I heard Steve yell. I pulled the com out of my ear. I held my hands up and crouched down, setting my gun on the floor and kicked it away from both of us.
“Let’s talk.” I said calmly holding my hands up. The man gave me a confused look.
“What are you trying to pull!” He yelled moving the gun so it pointed at me. I shook my head trying to be as calm as possible.
“Nothing.” I said. I gestured behind me “I told them to stand down, it’s you and me.” I pointed to the girl. “Let her go and take me.” I heard the com going crazy from its place on the ground. The suspect eyed me before pushing the girl away. I heard movement from behind me the suspect raised his gun towards the girl. I jumped towards her as his gun went off. I felt the impact of the girl and we rolled together. I heard the mans body drop as the rest of the team ran into the mall. I pushed myself up and scanned over the girl.
“Are you hit.” She shook her head but pointed to my side. I looked down and saw blood. I had been hit in the side. “Go to your mom.” I ordered.
“Will you be alright.” I nodded. As she scurried away I laid back on the ground.
“Are you insane!” I heard Steve yell. I closed my eyes and took a pained breath. In that moment I knew it hit my lung. Steve came closer. “Y/N.” his voice was full of dread. I groaned. “Shit!” He ran towards me “We have an officer down at 5th and central!” He scrambled next to me pulling at the straps of my vest.
“Steve.” I said. “Steve.” He looked at me. “Have them check the girl again.” I coughed slightly. Steve’s eyes widened as he brought his hand up and wiped my mouth. I saw the panic cross his face. “It’s bad isn’t it.” He shook his head as Danny and Kono raced towards us. I waved them off. They stood skeptical before turning to deal with the civilians.
“Nothing you can’t handle.” the look on his face betrayed him.
“It’s not very like you to lie commander.” I heard the sirens in the distance, It was getting really hard to keep my eyes open. Steve shook his head placing his hand on my face.
“Steve, I love you.” He looked at me and shook his head.
“Don’t say goodbye,” He growled tears filling his eyes. “Don’t you dare say it.” In all of they years I had known him I had only seen him cry a handful of times.
“Tell me you love me, Please.” I begged my voice getting weaker.
“Always I will always love you, but your gonna survive.” His hand was covered in blood from pressing against the wound. I took a deep breath.
“I don’t regret it Steve,” I looked into his green eyes the paramedics were rushing down the strip.”I would do it over and over again if it meant I could save her.” My voice was barely a whisper. Steve leaned down and kissed me. I closed my eyes.
