Supernatural AU! Or, Mafia AU if you're not into Supernatural :)
*cough* not to be the guy that self promotes, but i already have a supernatural shotor fic i’m writing👀 but here’s another one cause i love supernatural aus:D
shiro grew up with his grandparents, who lived on the border of a nature reserve. growing up he used to go exploring in the woods on his own nearly every day along with his dog, haru. one day, though, when he was seven years old, he wandered into a part of the forest he’d never been to before, and suddenly he realized he was lost. his grandparents had always told him he should stay in one place if he ever got lost, but shiro was a precocious child and thought he knew how to find his way back. (he didn’t)
before he knew it, the sky began to grow dark. and while shiro was brave for a child his age, he’d never been in the woods on his own after dark. realizing he and haru would likely have to spend the night alone in the woods, shiro went in search of a safe place for them to sleep. he came across an outcropping of rocks with a ancient looking weeping willow tree growing out the top, and hidden behind the tree’s hanging branches was a little cave that shiro couldn’t see very far into, but trusted haru to alert him to any danger.
they settled in, shiro hugging haru close as the sky turned to black and the air began to fill with the sounds of the night. he was just dozing off when he heard a rustling sound somewhere further in the cave. shiro tensed against haru, holding him closer and squinting into the darkness. eventually, he saw a faint white light that grew brighter as it neared until suddenly the light came around the corner and shiro had to turn away so his eyes could adjust to the light.
then, a voice started speaking to him, high pitched like a child’s and with an accent like the people from his grandma’s favorite show, the one with the funny, old-timey clothing. “who are you? what are you doing here?” they asked. “i got lost,” shiro responded, and then he finally turned to look at the stranger and yelled in surprise. the most shocking thing was their skin, a purple color that looked like it belonged on a flower’s petals and not as a person’s skin color. next was the unnatural orb of white light they were carrying in a hand with long, sharp nails. he then noticed the yellow eyes that caught and reflected the light eerily, the slightly protruding fangs, and the snowy white, chin-length hair tucked behind pointed ears.
shiro is understandably freaked out, and the purple kid responds with suspicion. but when they find out who (and what) the other is (lotor is a faeling–aka a half-fae), they’re suddenly very interested in the other. they talk for a while, and lotor agrees to stay with shiro and protect him during the night if shiro keeps him company (lotor ran away for the night, and didn’t want to be found by his governess just yet). they spend hours talking, but shiro keeps almost falling asleep, so lotor tells him to stop fighting it and that he’ll make sure no one hurts him. shiro doesn’t want to fall asleep, though, because he’s afraid that this will all turn out to be a dream. lotor gives shiro a stone in the shape of a ring and tells him that he can keep it as proof that lotor (and the fae world) are real. (lotor doesn’t explain what the stone is, when shiro asks, just says it’s a stone.)
when shiro wakes up the next morning, lotor is gone, but he still has the stone he gave him, so he’s happy to know it wasn’t all a dream. he’s able to find his way back home now that it’s daylight and he recognizes some landmarks. his grandparents are super upset because they were very worried about him, but when shiro tries to reassure them by telling them lotor watched over him, they become even more concerned that shiro is making things up. shiro insists that he’s telling the truth, and is so insistent that his grandparents end up taking him to a child psychologist. at first, shiro continues to insist that lotor and fae are real, but eventually realizes no adults are gonna believe him, so he stops mentioning it to anyone. eventually, his grandparents back off about seeing a therapist and everything, but shiro continues to privately believe that lotor is real.
as he grows up, though, and never sees or hears from lotor (or any fae) again, shiro starts doubting his memories and wonders if it really wasn’t just a dream and that he just found the stone in that cave…. He still wears the stone on a chain around his neck, though. He can’t really figure out why he feels the need to or why he likes it, but he does.
years later, and whether fae are real or not is the last thing on shiro’s mind. an ex-cia agent whose last undercover mission went horribly wrong and ended with him losing his right arm and leaving the cia for good, shiro moves back to his old home town. though both his grandparents died years ago, they left the house for shiro and shiro decides to try and fix it up. it’s just him and his dog, though an old friend of his grandmother’s does bring food by on occasion, often bringing her grandson Lance along and talking them both into letting Lance help Shiro with fixing the house up.
But most days, it’s just Shiro and his service dog, and they often take walks around the nature reserve. One day while on a walk, he gets the feeling that he’s being watched, but there’s no one there. The feeling continues for a while and he ends up cutting his walk short and hurrying home. He checks and double checks that all doors and windows are locked, the curtains are closed, etc. The night goes pretty normally, so he eventually starts relaxing, but then he hears some scratching sounds outside the house. He grabs his handgun from his bedroom and follows the noise as it makes its way towards his front door. Someone tries the handle, but finds it locked. And then, the multiple locks shiro has on the door undo themselves, one by one.
the door creaks open and shiro has his gun up and ready, but nothing comes through. he walks forward, slow and cautious, and then whips around the corner of the door, but nothing is there. he closes the door and re-locks it. he’s standing there, confused, when he suddenly gets that feeling again that he’s being watched. he whips around, gun raised, but still, there’s nothing there. And then something big slams into him, knocking him against the wall. he still can’t see anything, there’s nothing there, not even a shadow, but then something is bearing down on him and it’s so strong he has no hope of fighting against it.
He struggles and struggles, but then the thing on top of him starts pressing down on his throat. he’s rapidly running out of air, but then suddenly his door goes flying off its hinges and across the room, and someone rips whatever was attacking shiro off of him. while he’s struggling to get his breath, he pushes himself away from the fight he hears happening. by the time he’s pushed himself against the wall and is able to breathe, the fight is over and whatever broke his door down is walking towards him. they have a sword, which they place on the ground as the kneel in front of shiro.
“shiro?” they ask, and suddenly shiro can’t breathe for an entirely different reason.
[drama is brewing in the magical world and threatens to take over the human world. lotor is on the run after stealing a powerful artifact from his father, and hopes to find refuge in the lost elven kingdom (which he first has to find…). shiro offers to help him, but he’ll soon find that the magical world is a very dangerous place for a human, and that though fae never lie, faelings have a habit of never telling the whole truth.]
Bonus: lance accidentally sees lotor when he makes a surprise visit to shiro’s house. he understandably freaks out and tries to run, but lotor grabs him and holds him up by the back of his shirt like a kitten until shiro can talk him into sitting still long enough to listen.
