The first time he threw the ball to knock over the bottles, Makoto focused intently and aimed well. Before the ball left his hand, a pair of rowdy children ran through. One of them ran into him, and the ball landed nowhere near the bottles. It still counted.
The second time he threw the ball to knock over the bottles, his slightly off aim made the ball hit just where the bottles were strongest. No bottle wobbled or fell over. The future refused to change.
“I’ll try it one more time,” he said urgently, pulling more change out of his pocket.
