I need to fix the bottom hem of my pants, but aside from that they look (at least in silhouette) like Venetian hose which honestly is kind of unflattering in general but I don’t really care, I threw these together on a whim and they turned out decent. Also forgot to make myself a padded layer for under my armour so my back and shoulders are in so much pain right now. Going to be dropping off my rapier at home before heading to the theatre to see Halloween Kills with a couple coworkers, sitting/laying down actually helps with the armour pain so I should be fine to wear it all for the rest of the night.

Pauldron!

Okay, I know it's heaps later than I promised and I suck, but I'm choosing to glaze over that in todays post, and to focus instead on how to make cool shoulder armour (or at least, how I made mine). Lets get to it! I made mine out of papier mache, among other things. I didn't take a whole heap or photos of this one, so you'll have to bear with me and actually read this post. :) First thing I did was build the basic structure. I did this out of cardboard strips I'd cut out of cereal boxes. Each strip was roughly an inch wide, I find that to be pretty easy to work with, but obviously cut them thinner/wider depending on what you find easy. Don't go crazy with a ruler or anything, they don't need to be neat. Just hack into it. So I took my strips, and I basically taped them to my shoulder (using masking tape) to get the shape that i wanted. Cereal boxes are great for this, because the card is both rigid enough to not flop everywhere, but also flexible enough to bend into really nice curves.

That's what I ended up with. At this stage, it's lumpy, my tape has wrinkles in it, it's not great. It's just the structure though, it doesn't matter. I then wrapped the outside with bubble wrap, to smooth it out and bulk it up a bit. I just taped that in place. Then, following those super rough pencil lines you can just see (near the f) in that picture, I glued some cord. This was so I'd have a raised bit as a guide for my strap. Then I papier mached over the top. I only did 2 layers, it was really only to smooth everything out and give me an even, consistent surface. I don't do anything fancy with my mache, I just dump a bunch of flour and water into a bucket until I get a consistency I like (thicker than water, but not gluggy), then I add a large pinch of salt so it doesn't go mouldy.

I was planning to only paint it. In game, it's just plain brown (there's some stitching around the bottom, but I was ignoring it). However, I wasn't entirely thrilled with that idea. Given the textures the rest of my costume had, I didn't want a big brown painty lump on my shoulder. So, I took a scrap of leatherette I'd used elsewhere on the costume and hot-glued it in place, cutting little slits to accommodate the curves (like little darts). I stitched up a couple of the bigger, more visible cuts, because I didn't wanna risk them peeling or anything. For the strap, I used a luggage strap which I found at an op shop; It's like a leather belt, but heaps longer. You could use a belt, I ended up cutting it, but i always figure it's best to have to cut stuff off than learn to live with stuff that's just too short. I loved my luggage strap though. It's really old and worn, which I think works great in this context (imagine if I had a shiny new strap there instead). I honestly can't remember if I used hot glue or two-part epoxy to stick it on. I think hot glue. Either would work.

Then, just to finish it off and make it more comfy, I hot glued some cheapy crappy faux fur inside of it. I liked the idea of having little bits of fur sticking out of my armour, so I didn't worry about trimming sticky-out bits.

And that's it! My completed pauldron. :) Hope that's helpful.

Help anyone?

Arrgh, I saw a couple a days ago an image of a pauldron made as a fashion piece. It was in grey silk (I think) and decorated with pearls and it looked really gorgeous, but now I can't find it and it's really making me frustrated. I think it was here on tumblr, but I've been scrolling a few days down on my dash and it's gone. It might also have been on deviantart, but I do think it was on tumblr...

It was a nice accesssorie and would make a beautiful statment piece to any clothing. I'm definitiely thinking of including it as the current fashion for my comic. A quick google search really made me fall in love with the style. I might need to acquire one for my self.
