Presenting Lily Mars / Judy Garland as Lily Mars
This is the first fancy dress Lily wears, to a theater performance and party in her Indiana hometown. Later, after she goes to New York, she'll get to wear some more sophisticated dresses, but I think there's something charming about this one. I like the floofy ruffle at the bottom and the eyelet lace at the neckline. I also like how the sleeves are split so they can flutter and drape.
It's interesting that Lily is wearing this just-below-the-knee skirt when virtually every other woman at the party is wearing a full-length evening dress. You can see how the concept of teenagers as a separate group with their own style is starting to develop.
I know Judy Garland used to angst about not getting the "glamor girl" treatment that was given to some of her young contemporaries at MGM like Lana Turner, but I really think movies like this one did all right by her. (Not that there weren't other problems with how MGM treated her, of course.)
