I find myself rewatching the third movie more because of all the wasted potential... like they introduced a 16 year old and he didn't make a single your mum joke at Charming?

This pairing is wrong for a variety of reasons

they're way too similar so there's no unique dynamic, i guess that's the point but it's still bland as unflavored grits

we don't get a backstory on how they met, so it comes off really forced like they needed an excuse for Charming not to be in love with Fiona anymore even tho whole his plan involved getting back at Shrek for" stealing" her, so it made no sense for him to move on just like that

Rapunzel would get sick of his immaturity eventually

Charming only sees her as a fling/arm candy despite her showing a personality (well as far as satellite love interests go)

Rapunzel is the aforementioned satellite, only exists to give Charming a new love with none of the development, total waste of Maya Rudolph

Undermines Charming's villain arc bc why would he date another princess?

It would've made much more sense if Charming's new love interest was a villain or outcast herself that was we get more insight on how that side were affected by the status quo and forces charming to do something legitimately important

Tbh Rapunzel simply fits better with her friends her betrayal feels forced like they needed an evil princess

We barely see them together so again, it ends up feeling shoehorned for the sake of plot

I am going through a Shrek phase at the moment. 

And I thought to myself. What if Charming survived the tower by poofing away with fairy magic?

My thinking is that he always had this magic, but because of his mother’s doting and coddling there was never a need to express it. Until the tower incident where in pure panic he just teleported outside the theatre. Without the crown or any clothing for that matter. Just pure reaction. 

Things happen and he eventually embraces his new role as an evil King/Sorcerer. And Farquaad’s there too because Charming tried to bring back his mum but accidentally got the tiny man instead. And now their stuck with each other because Farquaad is magically bound to him and Charming has no idea how to disconnect him. 

Just the idea of an stereotypically evil sorcerer with dark clothing and make-up whose magic is, pink sparkles and bubbles is kinda funny.

Post canon where shrek, artie, donkey and puss go camping and drag charming along so he can learn how to appreciate nature

Okay that post about Dragon turning into a unicorn because of Donkey taking the transforming spell got me thinking about what would happen if gwynn and rhodanthe did the same

If Rhondanthe takes the spell Artie turns into a swan. Because no matter what form she was in, Artie still loved her, so the same rule applies here. Only thing is you can't wield a sword with a beak! The spell breaks when Rhodanthe learns to embrace her differences and Artie doesn't need to go through EXACTLY what she went through in order to relate.

If Artie takes the spell, Rho is unaffected. This is because Artie doesn't really have an idealized version of her, he likes her regardless. But if this was before his arc, Rho would've changed into a clone of Guinevere (his og crush) or look vastly more beautiful and regal than she is in reality. Showing how he wanted to be a perfect ruler. The spell breaks once he gets over his fears and realizes he is always going to make mistakes. As long as he learns from them.

If gwynn takes it charming becomes goth. He'd still have his personality but now he's wearing dingy greys and brown, far too much makeup for his liking and *shudders* mismatched SOCKS! 😫😫😫 He wouldn't like his perfect gold hair suddenly a dull, messy brunet either. The spell breaks when Gwynn accepts Charming as he is; he doesn't need to fit her "style" when she can love him for being unashamedly himself.

On the other side if Charming takes the spell Gwynn becomes his ideal "Damsel in Distress." Her scars heal and her dresses fine pastel-colored silk. Even her personality changes. She smiles and swoons and sings, follows him around like a puppy and waits for his cue to do anything.

However like all things magic comes with a price and Gwynn ends up developing an obsession. Refusing to let anyone else get close to Charming. He ends up missing the very thing that drew him to her in the first place. Now she's a Yes Woman. A frightening, dangerously controlling Yes Woman. Eventually Charming breaks it by reaffirming Gwynn's personal agency and allowing her to make choices.

Because i want more shrek fandom that aren't just ironic memes or shitty sex jokes, I decided to create outfits based on the romantic subplot between Charming and my OC Gwynn. I found this cute little site on Doll Divine which fits their dynamic perfectly!

Analysis down below!

First Meeting: Gwynn works at the villains' pub when ex rich kid comes waltzing in with a proposal she hastily refused. She wears a muted blue hinting at her future *wink wink nudge*

One potential scene is Charming (when he was still wealthy) encountering the mysterious thief "Black Swan" they don't know each other yet. Gwynn wears a lot of dark greys as pure black would've been too expensive at the time. Charming's costume is based on what he wore in Shrek 2

Argument scene where Gwynn tells Charming he is taking things way too far after he threatens to harm innocent kids. He says some harsh words to her so she ends up leaving. Charming's fit is loosely based on the movie version. In this context it's ironic: What he feels as the highest point of his life is actually his lowest bcuz now he's totally under his father's control & losing the only real friend he ever had. Two more wobbly steps towards his canon fate. Gwynn's dress is gray to reflect on the sorrowful mood.

Happier Ending (aka MY CANON NOW) this is whwre I say "screw you Dreamworks for fucking over Charming!" After reinstating Fiona to the throne & throwing deadbeat daddy in jail, Gwynn becomes the new Witch Godmother. Charming becomes a fashion guru. He's back to wearing blue symbolizing how he's no longer controlled by Uther, & sticking true to himself. Gwynn wears purple bc it's a mix of blue&red but also true to herself (& of she can finally afford to purple dye)

Shrek 4 ever after (4 yrs after 3) Charming & Gwynn are still dating and so not rushing into marriage yet! Also she has a new hairstyle. They're at the Golden Apple to celebrate the triplets' fourth birthday. I did play around with the idea of Gwynn being pregnant but I decided they should wait a few more years. Not every couple needed kids!

AU Gwynn where Rumple borks things up! She is one of the key figures in the resistance. Didn't have time to make Charming. Since they never met Charming ended up as a puppet king. LITERALLY. Gwynn still has her magic but it is VERY limited. Her dress is symbolic of yin-yang fitting the goal to restore balance

Post (my) Canon: Wedding Bells! They get married quickly after the events of Shrek 4. Gwynn wears blue, and Charming white and gold. It's a decent ceremony.

However there may be a scene where Gwynn stays anyways and does the play. Her gown is blue as a reminder that Charming still has time to make the right choices.

Bonus: the two other play dresses one to match with Charming's outfit the other is also based on Rapunzel since technically Gwynn fills her role as his love interest (only she's actually relevant) I think maybe as a meta joke she ends up wearing a wig to emphasize her playing a damsel in distress when she's the kinda damsel who causes distress! 😂😂😂

I know Charming looks like France from APH but it was as close as I can get it (kinda dig the waves) & the dollmaker didn't have 5 o clock shadow.

Gwynn canonically has scarring thay she sometimes wear makeup over. I felt that for her, she learned to embrace her flaws, so that helps Charming learn to embrace his.

I don't care for Charming x Rapunzel (shrek version not Disney or barbie) bc it came right the fuck outta nowhere, it was done solely to remove charming's crush on Fiona without actually growing out of it and tbh if charming was going to work with villains it make more sense of his love interest was also associated with villains. Not a princess or 'hero' but someone who vibes with villains bc they easily accept outcasts like her.
