Shrimpheads, San Diego, CA

The opening of Shrimpheads in the North Park neighborhood of San Diego was highly anticipated among my friends. Many of us are big New Orleans fans and fans of crawfish, in particular. I couldnt wait to get there to try them out. Unfortunately, our visit didnt start well, as we were informed that they had no fresh crawfish this particular day. We were disappointed but found a few other items that we thought would be just fine. We ordered a couple of beers and talked over our options. We settled on the house deal, which 3/4 lbs of clams, mussels, shrimp and crawfish as well as potatoes, corn and andouille sausage. All of that for under 40$!! Without the crawfish, we substituted extra shrimp and were happy with our choice!! The platter came and it was an enormous amount of food! I couldnt imgine finishing it all but we would certainly give it our best effort! There was a choice of sauces, from which we chose the medium spicy with a side of atomic, just to try it out! Everything was very good, with the spicy andouille being my personal favorite. We also made the correct choice adding extra shrimp, as they werenucely cooked and complimented well with the medium spicy sauce. I did try the shrimp with a little atomic sauce and it lived up to its name!! A little went a long way, very glad that we tried it. We ended up saving it with ourleftovers, which were most of the potatoes as well as a good number of shrimp! That made for an excellent spicy seafood hash the next day for lunch for me!! As we did want the crawfish, a few of us returned the following week, only after calling to ensure the availability of the fresh crawfish!! It was absolutely worth the return trip!! We shared 2 lbs of the crawfish and they were as good as any I have enjoyed in New Orleans!! Thebportion was generous for the price and there were some tails that were as large as any that I have ever seen!! Highest recommendation for the restaurant, in general, but also for the fresh crawfish, in particular!! Shrimpheads is a must for anyone in San Diego who is a fan of fresh Crawfish!! Portions were generous for the price and both of our servers were very friendly and helpful!! For excellent New Orleans fare, definitely make a trip to Shrimpheads for either lunch or dinner. You will be glad that you did!! Have a great day!!
