“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?!” cried Nicky, “Why was I the last to know that you were fucking leaving? You told me that you wanted to give us a shot again, and now you’re not even going to be here?
“Baby… I was going to tell you, but, I… I didn’t want to hurt you.”
“Well, it’s a little late for that,” she said sniffling.
Rosé stepped closer, wanting to pull her close, but Nicky backed up, not wanting to be touched by anyone right now. She had been so happy, because she loved Rosé with everything she had, and now she was leaving. Maybe she was overreacting, but she couldn’t help it, she just wanted her Rosé here with her.
“You know this is my dream Nicky.”
“I know, but I just… I thought you wanted me to be a part of your life again.”
“I do! I really do, but this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. This tour could help me make it, and then we can do whatever we want. But this early in my career, I can’t pick and choose these things.”
“I know this is everything to you, Rosie,” she said in a small voice. “And I don’t mean to be a selfish bitch, it’s just we only started to rekindle the old flame recently and I worry with you being gone for so long that any fire will be snuffed out by distance or maybe… maybe you’ll find someone else out there. We wanted to take it slow… it’s not like we’re even girlfriends anymore.” God, that hurt to say.
“I mean, it’s true isn’t it? I guess we should just break up now and have it over. Hell, it wouldn’t even really be a break up.””
“No! I don’t want that. I meant it when I said I wanted a second chance with you. Please, don’t do this…”
“Look, I’m happy for you Rosé, I really am, I know this is your dream. A national tour? Possible international tours? It’s amazing what you’ve achieved, but I already know there isn’t room for me. And I refuse to be the anchor that drags you down.”
“I don’t view you that way at all, Nicky. I don’t like it when you talk about yourself that way either. I’d love for you to be with me, but I know you have your own obligations here. I wouldn’t want you to lose all your modeling contracts. You deserve them, you deserve all of that and more.”
Nicky was silent for a moment before finally speaking. “So… this is goodbye then.”
“I don’t want it to be. We still have technology.”
“I mean, yeah, but we both know how that will go. We start out talking daily, then weekly, then every now and again, because we’re just so busy we don’t even have time to check our messages. Distance is a huge relationship killer, and I think we both know that. I don’t want it to be goodbye either, but I don’t see any other way that this is going to go.”
Rosé nodded, in her heart of hearts, she knew Nicky was right. And it did break said heart greatly. It was incredibly bittersweet, she finally got what she wanted, but at the cost of someone she loved so fiercely.
“Maybe… it was just the wrong time,” murmured Rosé.
“So… this really is goodbye then?”
“Go chase your dreams Rosie,” she said with a small, yet sad smile.
They did keep in touch, or tried to anyway. As Nicky predicted it did taper off after awhile, being so preoccupied by their professions that social media and social lives took a back seat. It seemed as if the past two years were a blur. Days morphed into weeks and those weeks became months and in what seemed like no time at all, an entire year had passed. And then another did the same. The good news though, is that when the final tour wrapped, she was going to have a few months off and she wanted to get back to New York immediately. She wanted to see Nicky, wanted to make up for lost time. If Nicky hadn’t already moved on, that is. Rosé wouldn’t blame her if she had, two years is a long time to wait.
Nicky was in her living room, sipping on her coffee and flipping through the newest issue of Vogue where she had a nice fashion spread. As much as she loved modeling and wearing the newest and most innovative clothes, it never filled the void in her heart that only one specific person could fill. She supposed eventually she would have to stop pining and move on, it wasn’t healthy to dwell on this so much. It had been two years…
It was then that she heard her doorbell. Groaning to herself, she got up and made her way to the door. She sure as hell didn’t want to deal with anyone today. But when she saw a certain pink-haired woman on the other side of the door, her heart nearly leapt through her chest. Nicky slung the door open, and before Rosé could say anything, she just wrapped her arms around her and hugged her tightly.
“I missed you,” Nicky muttered.
Rosé smiled and pressed a kiss to her hair, “I missed you too, baby.”
