your family home
driving home started to feel better each time the semester ended, knowing you would lounge around and soak up the sun while eating your favourite snacks and not having to worry about running late to classes.
your braids were fresh and you were more than ready to throw yourself on your bed and wake up smelling dinner or takeout that your mom would definitely have control over. the cars parked close to the garages felt familiar, your brother’s srt and a mercedes suv that belonged to his best friend, jaafar.
god, where would you even begin talking about jaafar?
he was everywhere your brother was and vice versa, with the two instantly becoming friends in the second grade and maintaining that friendship decades later. jaafar had basically grown up around your home, sometimes coming to family vacations and joining celebration dinners. you’d always thought of him as your brother’s cute friend, never hiding your obvious but innocent heart eyes whenever he’d be around the house doing miscellaneous things.
“your volcano’s cool.” jaafar complimented, standing next to your chair as you worked on your science project in the eighth grade. you poured yourself into that volcano and to hear him say that made your heart flutter. “t-thanks, jaffa. hopefully i can get that medal i want.” you leaned your head all the way back to look at him, his mole on his cheek and his short and slicked curls were hidden under a baseball cap.
jaafar just gave you a shrug, moving to the fridge to get water for him and tatum on the basketball court in your backyard. “make sure it’s not orange, bug. wouldn’t wanna confuse it with a stack of carrots.” he smirked to himself, walking back outside onto your patio.
your lovestruck self couldn’t even realise that he threw shade at your volcano but you couldn’t be bothered with that. jaafar, arguably the cooler one between him and tatum, spoke and liked your volcano! the teacher’s opinion was dust from that moment and you scrambled around the house to find brown paint.
you finally parked next to the suv, thankful that there was enough space for all the cars. your suitcases and other heavy things were still in the car as you hopped out and adjusted your shorts, the sun sticking to your skin as soon as you walked to your front door. the baseline of “family ties” by baby keem ran through the house and through your sneaker clad feet as you entered home. it looked upgraded, and stylish, very much like your mom.
“tatum! tay, you here?” you called out as loud as you could, making your way to the kitchen and there the two men were standing, trying to throw grapes in each other’s mouths but dismally failing. jaafar’s back was facing you and his long legs were hidden by the kitchen island so tatum spotted you first, his eyes widening and his jaw dropping.
“yo, what the fuck! you back!” he excitedly exclaimed, basically jumping up and down as he got near you and put you in a bear hug, swinging you around like you weighed nothing. “alright, alright! i’m gonna get a headache.” you laughed as he eventually put you down and finally gave you a normal hug.
jaafar, on the other hand, couldn’t believe what he was seeing. he’s known you forever, practically growing up with you and staying in his lane while still appreciating whatever the relationship was. he could sometimes feel the heart eyes you would give him when you thought you were being discreet then shy away and stare back at the lego set he gifted you for your 16th birthday. that was until he moved out of the country for a couple of years after he finished high school.
the first week without seeing his face in your home felt like torture but you lived with it as months and years passed by. you became so engrossed in your own life that you hadn’t a clue when he came back, busy with cheerleading, studying and having friends. you had thought your mini crush on jaafar would disappear when he left but your eyes connected with his, the butterflies in your stomach went rampant.
jaafar was looking at a completely different person from what he remembered you looking like. he didn’t even wanna believe the pictures on instagram when you’d show up on his suggested feed. you’d grown into your body, curves more apparent, skin more bronze than before and a sleeves of artwork covering your arm and possibly in other places. your face, still the same but sharpened, your lashes hitting the apple of your cheeks and your makeup looked wonderful…if you were even wearing any. my god, you were absolutely gorgeous.
your eyes gazed at him, catching every detail as quickly as he could before he caught you. jaafar had grown out his curls, touching the nape of his neck. he looked a bit more buff compared to the last you saw him, his skin still golden and tanned as ever. a simple white tee and oversized jeans with sneakers always did the trick for you, it was so him. his eyes were still soft and low but now they held a different mood as he turned his attention back to the bowl of grapes he was holding.
“aye, did you hear a word i said?” tatum’s voice filled your ears again, a slight push to your arm bringing you back to reality. “huh?” you expressed with furrowed eyebrows.
He kissed his teeth before speaking. “man….whatever. look, mom and dad headed to malibu and we gonna see ‘em tomorrow at aunt vicky’s place.” he spoke, shoving two grapes in his mouth. “jaafar gon’ stay here so it can be easy. yo, i need to go to the bathroom. be nice and greet that boy.” tatum spoke at a million kilometres an hour, pushing your shoulder gently this time while he wizzed past to head to his bathroom on the other side of the house.
“hey bug.” jaafar’s soft yet deep voice rang through the kitchen and the childhood nickname didn’t fail to make you smile. He rounded the island just to get closer to hug you. “hey, jaafar.” you greeted with a smile, huffing a bit when your head landed on his chest and your arms around his waist.
“hope UCLA’s been treatin’ you good.” he commented, not yet wanting to let go of you. his hands on your warm skin as he tried to not trail his eyes down to your outfit.
you nodded a little. “it’s good, i swear. real boujee people over there. speakin’ of boujee, thank you again for the iPad. i use that thing every day.” you smiled up at him, thankful for the iPad he got you in the middle of first semester. it came as a surprise, the package was sitting pretty on your dorm bed and you were already sending thank you speeches to your family group chat when tatum confirmed it was jaafar who got it for you on a whim.
you still didn’t know what that meant but you were extremely grateful either way.
“yeah? well, that’s good. thought i’d chip in to make studying…better.” he shrugged after his last word, stepping back to give you some breathing space. he just didn’t know that you enjoyed being in his space. “well, ‘nough about school. my car’s just filled with my stuff.” you huffed, sitting on the kitchen stool.
he really didn’t want to look but he noticed the way your curves filled out the seat. “how’ve you been? heard about the breakup from blabbermouth.” you asked, keeping a straight face after calling your brother that. granted, he loved gossiping so it’s only fair to name him that.
that seemed to get a chuckle out of jaafar and his smile made your toes curl. his smile was one of your favourite things that you’d draw in your secret diary in 8th grade. “uh, i’ve been good. working on a few stuff. the breakup was gonna happen one way or another, y’know?” he shrugged again, sticking a grape in his mouth.
the two of you started talking about any and everything that you missed in each other’s lives and you were now perched on the island with your ankles crossed while sharing even more grapes now. you knew that your brother was either having a bad time in the bathroom or got distracted and started playing video games. the yelling from way down the hall suggested the latter as you and jaafar were in the kitchen.
“so…cheer. never knew you were flexible or athletic.” he started, standing up straight and right next to you. “i was just as surprised as you were. i like to think i can do just ‘bout anythin’ now.” you grinned and he chuckled once again.
“hm, that’s so? you’re gonna need to teach me a few stuff then.” jaafar spoke, connecting his eyes with yours and yet, the meaning behind his words flew over your head.
you blinked. “it’d be tough for you though. since i’m leadin’ the majorette team too.” the furrowing of your brows made him stifle his laugh at how worried you seemed if he were to even attempt what you do on a weekly basis.
“you’re like a jack of all trades, that’s my girl.” you felt his large hand pat your knee and the contact lasted no longer than a minute. the tips of your ears began to warm at his words and you quickly broke eye contact.
having a blabbermouth of a friend like tatum came with perks for jaafar. he already knew that you were leading something so historic because tay sent him videos of choreography with his uncle’s music or with you at competitions for majorettes. jaafar has been supporting you all these years and you weren’t fully aware.
deciding to focus on anything else than how close he was to you, his hair caught your attention again. it was just perfect and it had a distinct scent of coconut - the same as the shampoo you recommended years ago.
he remembered.
“you grew your hair out real long this time, i like it.” you spoke softly this time, and you noticed his head leaning downward and your hand gently felt the surface of his hair against your slightly trembling fingers before your fingers dove in.
the softness of it under your touch wasn’t what gave a shiver to your spine. it was jaafar lifting his head slowly, keeping your fingers attached to his hair and looking into your eyes with a more tender expression. the californian sun shined through the floor to ceiling windows of the spacious kitchen and that added a warmth to the tense atmosphere.
your dreams were coming true by the minute. having this moment with him was somewhere written in an old journal tucked away, the butterflies fluttering around in your stomach. remembering the times you’d squeal over him with your friends during a sleepover, watching tatum and jaafar play basketball on your home court then ducking away from the window when you thought he was looking. not to mention how you’d try to be nonchalant at the mention of his name but just seeing a picture made you giggle.
“j-” before you could utter a single syllable, the moment was interrupted by a shrill ringing of a phone and you knew it wasn’t yours. the both of you looked at the device at the same time however, your stomach dropped at what flashed on the screen.
his “ex’s” number with a red heart emoji next to it and she was calling.
before you could even think about it, you removed your fingers from his head with a quick speed and jumped off the counter, fixing your shorts. thank god for that call because you were back in reality, what if your brother walked in on such a scene? hell no.
“bug-”
“i need to get my shit from the car. can you tell tatum to help? y’know he only listens to you.” a sweet smile spread across your face, acting like the past 10 minutes never happened.
he watched as you walked out the kitchen and he internally cussed himself out before answering the phone with a sigh.

aunt vicky’s backyard was filled to the brim but you wouldn’t trade this for the world. the box of cinnamon rolls was getting heavy on your arm as you greeted everyone in the house first with your parents trailing right behind you.
“look how pretty you is!” “you growin’ everyday, princess!” “where’s this glow from?”
all these comments were hurled at you by your family members and you couldn’t help but laugh at how much love you received and you hadn’t even made it to the kitchen. you can admit, you were a bit late to the function since you had to make a quick stop but it wasn’t too much of an issue. after making your rounds with everyone in the house and receiving money from your granny ‘just because’, you made your way to the backyard and were immediately hit with the smell of the meat on the barbecue.
while hugging uncle eli, he made a teasing noise once he looked at the person basically glued to your back. “and who’s this one? you made sure he got a plate?” uncle eli spoke with a nudge to your elbow.
“stop,” you chuckled as you turned your head to your guest. “this is xavier. he one of my college friends, he does the same degree as me and yes, he got a plate. aunt vicky made sure.”
“alright, kid. nice to meet ya, xavier. aye, make sure to tell your brother and jaafar, i said thank ya for them ice buckets and other shit they got. i tell ya, that jackson kid a good one.” uncle eli expressed, squeezing your friend’s shoulder and making his way to said ice buckets for a cold beer.
leading xavier to a couple free chairs with the first plates of the day, you sat, ate and joked around but you could feel eyes dagger on you for what felt like a long time. picking your head, you could see jaafar sitting next to your brother under the huge oak tree, a plate balancing on his thigh and he leaned all the way back into his plastic chair. the outfit he wore wasn’t any different than yesterday except that he wore sweatpants and his curls were more fluffed out.
good lord.
jaafar’s hand was supporting his chin as he stared at you and your guest. who was the guy next to you? why was his chair so close to yours? why did his hair look like that? why-
“j, damn you gonna snap the kid in half.” tatum cackled as he inhaled his plate. jaafar’s eyes snapped to his best friend before kissing his teeth together. “man, whatever. just wondering if…he could join us f’basketball.” he spoke, making up the lie on the spot which didn’t help tatum stop his laughter.
“sure, bud. anyway, why that nigga got green in the middle of his hair? aye man, my sister got some odd individuals in her life.” he scoffed, focusing back on his food.
thirty minutes later, all it took from jaafar was a slight head gesture and signalled to the side gate to get you out your seat and towards him. you weren’t really worried about xavier, he was playing cards with your other cousins so you actually followed jaafar and he lead to his car.
he started the car and just began driving to who knows where. “we goin’ on a weed run or what? i could’ve taken my good lighter.” you snickered, internally cringing at your joke since you really didn’t know if jaafar smoked or not.
he let out a little huff as a chuckle, using his single hand to drive. “your brother sent me to get something from the house. i knew you had the keys so.” he shrugged at the end of his sentence and your shoulders slumped at his words. you thought you were going to something fun with him but it was just an errand.
meanwhile, jaafar couldn’t believe you didn’t get it by now but it’s alright.
a bit later, you were in the guest bedroom of the house and sitting pretty on the bed while jaafar looked for whatever he was sent for.
“just so you know, i told her to block me.” he started.
your brows furrowed before they fell at the realisation of what he was talking about. “oh. you don’t have to tell me allat. i mean, it’s none of my business.” you spoke.
“yeah but it interrupted us, didn’t it?”
“well, yeah….”
he called your name once and he was in front of you. jaafar then kneeled in front of your legs and you were instantly panicking.
“wait, jaafar. what if someone comes in?”
“it’s okay, bug. i made sure it’s just you and me. couldn’t really say it while people could ruin the moment.” he murmured, putting his hands on the sides of your thighs and you thought you were completely drenched at the scent of his cologne.
you hesitated and he could see it. “what’s wrong? speak to me, princess.”
“you’re tatum’s best friend. what if whatever we do ruins all that?” you blinked at him.
“then i’ll stop right now and respect whatever you wanna do.” his hand now wanting to trail at your waist but he wanted words first.
you took a breath, gazed at his lips for a moment then back to his eyes. “…i wanna kiss you.” you said, softly smiling.
“go ahead, baby.”
the first touch of each other’s lips was electric and softer than you thought a first kiss with jaafar would go. he was incredibly gentle, finally putting his hands on your waist and pulling you closer to him, causing your legs to open wider but he didn’t rush it.
jaafar desperately wanted this to be good for you.
the shift from your lips to your slick underwear was dream-like, him treating your skin like gold leaf. his lips slightly grazed your clothed clit and you already dropped your head in pleasure.
“haven’t even done anythin’ to you, mama. look at me.” he commanded, kissing at your inner thighs to get your eyes on his. you lifted your head and you could just orgasm at the expression on his face. jaafar looked at your pussy like it was treasure and once the barrier of your panties was gone, he dived in.
you tried to keep your noises at a minimum, but the way his tongue fucked you while his nose kept grazing your bud drove you crazy. he’d switch, unable to resist your taste then he added two fingers inside you and you could feel a knot in your stomach begin to tighten.
“baby, please…i need it. oh my god…” you moaned out, your thighs caging his head in and he couldn’t be happier in this position. the jingling of your anklets made him harder than ever because he knew you were trembling and you were so close.
his fingers curled up inside you, making your eyes roll back and your arch deepen. “c’mon, give it to me, baby. you can do it, you’re so close.” he muffled against your clit and the vibrations of his voice made everything snap and you screamed, gripping into his hair as you came.
the tugging of his curls just made him more feral. he licked up your delicious essence, easily becoming one of his favourite tastes and he was blissfully unaware that some of your juices landed on his shirt.
“so proud of you, princess. can you give me another one? i know you got it in you, mama.” he muttered softly, kissing your bud before using his tongue to spell his name out on you, overstimulating you even further.
after another whine from your lips once his long fingers slipped out of you, he made you clean your essence off and maintained eye contact throughout. kissing jaafar felt like you were cloud nine, even better than you ever imagined.
“you had fun?”
“mhm. loved it…” you spoke, burying your face in his neck once he layed next to you.
“get your rest, princess. got more i wanna do with you.”
a kiss to your temple was what activated you to continue on with him.
