You know what is fantastic acting?
At the climax to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, after Li Mu Bai dies Shu Lien rises from his body and picks up the Green Destiny. She approaches Jen, who falls to her knees, and you can’t tell if she is going to kill Jen or not until she gets there. Right up until she puts the sword to her throat...and then draws it away.
Michelle Yeoh puts so much emotion into her expression that I can’t dismiss the possibility of vengeance out of hand. Anger at Jen for being the cause of Li Mu Bai’s death, plus resentment for the way she had so heavily occupied his attention in the recent days when they had almost begun a relationship. Grief as well for the simple fact that the man she loves has died, and also sympathy for Jen over their shared suffering of being bound by custom. Regret at her and Li Mu Bai’s own temerity and hesitation that kept them apart for so long.
I’ve seen the movie before and I honestly wonder how she is going to act.
Goddamn but she sells that.
