thoughts on sea horses
love those little guys. i decided to skim wikipedia bc i wanted to know about their prehensile tails and found some weird stuff
Seahorses use their long snouts to eat their food with ease. However, they are slow to consume their food and have extremely simple digestive systems that lack a stomach, so they must eat constantly to stay alive.
theyre like the hummingbird of the fish world, except instead of a stupidly fast metabolism, they just... got rid of their stomach. even in an environment with tons of food, how is that evolutionarily beneficial??
also the earliest known seahorses appeared 13 million years ago, which on its own isnt extraordinary, but im always surprised when fish groups have evolved more recently because you always think of fish being this ancient group right? but really, theyre still under evolutionary pressures and experiencing divergences just like any other group
also everyone makes a big deal out of the males incubating the eggs as if it’s the males that actually generate the eggs. it’s a cool strategy but i dont get why that specifically is what everyone remembers about them. guys, they don’t have a stomach, that’s WAY more interesting
