Hello I hope this didn’t sounds weird, but it’s true that both Ishida Mitsunari and Otani Yoshitsugu are both romantically involved to each other ? I have seen someone said that both of them are “lovers” but disguise their relationship as close friend. Honestly It’s the first time I heard something like this @_@, I know they’re pretty close to each other.
There was an allegation of it in this Edo era publication called the Kyougou Zekki 校合雑記. I looked around and it’s said that there’s no other source that says so apart from this one book. Opinions about this varies, but if the only reference comes from just this one book, then it doesn’t seem to be something credible.
In Edo era there were many stories about wistful romance between men, where the partners are willing to sacrifice everything for each other. For that reason, Yoshitsugu’s very close friendship to Mitsunari is viewed as romantic devotion. Yoshitsugu committed seppuku after being defeated in Sekigahara, and apparently this is viewed as an epic display of love/devotion.
Don’t want to be crass, but basically… it’s the Edo era equivalent of writing yaoi fanfiction about real people. It happens a lot, so prepare to find all sorts of “pairings” being alleged. There was something about Hideyoshi and Mitsunari too, and we’re not entirely sure about that either (depending on how much we believe the other story about Hideyoshi being absolutely not interested in men).
