[THE NATURE OF VISUAL AWARENESS] . - TRUE VISUAL AWARENESS - . [True Seeing is Apart from Seeing (pt.3 of 3)] . Commentary: All phenomena are born from true reality, and so true reality is the essential nature of all phenomena. . What then is true reality ultimately like? You cannot see it. It has merely been given a name, “true reality.” The idea is similar to the idea expressed in Laozi’s saying, “The Way that can be spoken of is not the eternal Way.” True reality is true emptiness, and it is also wondrous existence. Do you say that true emptiness is empty? It is not, because within it, all that exists comes into being. True emptiness is said to be true because it is not in fact empty, and all that exists is wondrous because it does not in fact exist. What exists within emptiness is wondrous existence. Emptiness therefore is not empty, and that lack of emptiness within emptiness is true emptiness. Since true emptiness is not empty, it is called “wondrous existence.” . Since wondrous existence does not exist, it is called “true emptiness.” These two names are one. If you investigate this in detail, you will find, however, that even that “one” does not exist. . Fundamentally, there isn’t anything at all. To truly be apart from all attributes is to have real samādhi. If you can separate yourself from all attributes, Mt. Tai could come crashing down in front of you and you would not be startled. . Demonic obstructions can only disturb your samādhi because your mind moves. As soon as your mind moves, the obstacles slip right in. If you don’t move, no demon in existence will have any way to get at you. No spell that can be recited can influence you. . It was because Ānanda didn’t have sufficient power of mental concentration that the Mātaṅga woman was able to confuse him. If he had had the genuine Śūraṅgama Samādhi, there would have been no need for the Buddha to speak the Śūraṅgama Sūtra or the Śūraṅgama Mantra. And you and I would not be able to study them now. . [The Two False Views: (pt.7 of 8)] . “To restate: your visual awareness of me now, and of yourself and of the ten classes of beings that can be seen in the world, is a defective awareness. It is not the awareness that is aware of the defect. The true nature of the essence of visual awareness is not defective, and therefore it is not what is ordinarily referred to as visual awareness. . “Ānanda, consider the distortion in visual awareness experienced by the people of that one country, in response to their shared karma. Compare it to the distorted visual awareness experienced by the person whose eyes are diseased, in response to his individual karma. The situations of the person with the eye disease and the people of that one country are similar, in that the illusory circles of colored light are a consequence of the eye disease, while the inauspicious phenomena seen by the people of that country are due to the miasmal energies that arise from their shared karma. . Both the individual karma and the shared karma have come into being because of distortions in awareness that have existed since time without beginning. . Commentary: The false view of the people of one country – the false view of the collective share – and the individual person’s false view of individual karma are equally empty and false. All these things are the empty false defect of your seeing — our false views, our discriminating views, a problem which develops in the seeing. [The seeing-essence has no problem]. [THE NATURE OF VISUAL AWARENESS] . - DISTORTIONS IN VISUAL AWARENESS BASED ON KARMA - . [The Two False Views: (pt.8 of8)] . “Nevertheless, all the beings with outflows and all the lands in the ten directions, including the Sahā world, with its four great seas and with the three thousand landmasses of Jambudvīpa, are fundamentally the enlightened, wondrous, luminous mind that understands and has no outflows. The conditions necessary for them all to arise are the illusory, diseased distortions in visual awareness, in awareness of sounds, and in all the other types of awareness. When these conditions are present in combination, the beings and lands come into being; when these conditions are not present, the beings and lands cease to be. . “When you remain entirely untouched by conditions, whether or not they are present in combination, you bring to an end all the causes of coming into being and ceasing to be. At that moment, you will awaken to perfect enlightenment, which is your true nature and which neither comes into being nor ceases to be. It is the pure, fundamental mind, the fundamental, everlasting enlightenment.” . Commentary: “The false view of individual karma and the false view of the collective share, these two different kinds of karmic responses spoken of above, are both are produced from a beginningless falsity in the seeing.” They all arise from ignorance, which from beginning-less time onward has given rise to an empty false seeing. That is how these states come into being. “Falsity in the seeing” is just the production of false views. Not to have any false views and to turn one’s back on the dust and unite with enlightenment, and get rid of false thinking, is just the true mind. Why is it that you have a true mind but cannot make use of it? Why can’t you be in control of things? It is because of false views. First let us consider the distorted visual awareness based on beings’ individual karma. When the person with an eye disease sees the illusory circles of colored light around a lamp, the circles seem to him to be external objects, but in fact what the person sees is a consequence of the disease.The disease places a distorting strain on his visual awareness; it is not the colored light that places the strain. . However, what is aware of the disease is not defective. In the same way, all that you can now see — the mountains, the rivers, the many lands, and the various forms of life — are the result of a disease that has existed in your visual awareness since time without beginning. The essence of visual awareness and what it is aware ofcause what seem to be external phenomena to appear. . Once we add another layer of understanding to our enlightenment, our awareness and what it is aware of become defective. While the awareness that is added to enlightenment is defective, however, the awareness that is the fundamental, enlightened, understanding awareness is not defective. . That is, the true awareness that is aware of the defective awareness is not itself defective.
