(tl;dr: if you get into this media we can yap about it together!)
I've added links to a couple relevant posts I've made about a lot of this media if you're curious and want to learn more about it! I also included playlists that go with the book recs to enrich your reading experience, if desired!
🩷Books:
The Shuttle, by Frances Hodgson Burnett, (free and up) (where to find • longer persuasion post • playlist) Bettina Vanderpoel, a rich american heiress, travels to england to rescue her sister from an abusive marriage. Bettina absolutely refuses to do what her sister and many of her peers did and marry a broke nobleman just for his fancy title. Along the way, she meets a broke nobleman with a fancy title who absolutely refuses to marry a rich american heiress just for her money. [🎶can i make it any more obvious?] This book is a bit lengthy (but do not under any circumstances read the abridged version) but it has a lot of parallels, symbolism, and recurring themes that make me want to chew on the bars of my enclosure.
Northargyle Abbie by Janelle Leonard. ($20 paperback, $10 ebook) (review • playlist) This book is written by one of my heroes in the authorial realm, and it tells the story of Abigail Morgan, a pastor's daughter with a deep interest in history. Upon inheriting a cottage halfway around the world and traveling there with her aunt who's on a worldwide book tour, she begins to discover a mystery surrounding her late grandmother's past. Along the way, she also meets Colter Wellesley, a big fan of her aunt's book series, especially the main character, who is in many ways based on Abigail, and who is all the more pleased to meet the girl who inspired the character. This is based on Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen, but you don't have to have read any of Austen's books to enjoy it!
The Rules of Falling For You by Mollie Rushmeyer ($16 ebook, $19 paperback) (liveblog of book • review • playlist) Zoey, a single woman who runs a podcast about the regency era and its application modern dating, has the chance to attend a regency themed couples retreat. Around the same time, her best friend's brother, Harrison, joins the crew for her podcast, and this man has secretly been yearning for her since childhood.
🩷TV Shows:
Lego Nexo Knights (free on tubi) (persuasion post) This one's forty episodes of barely-glued-together product placement, but I wholeheartedly enjoy it! The world building setting is fantastic (a high-tech medieval realm, complete with digital wizards, downloadable magic powers, and robotic dragons,) and the storyline is about the five greatest heroes of the realm who are lowkey cringefail high school graduates who don't always know what they're doing but are trying their best!
GI Joe Renegades (free on youtube!) (persuasion post) G.I.Joe Renegades: Full 26 episode animated series, officially released on YouTube by Hasbro, about a group of marines and their ninja trying to clear their names after finding out that their in-universe equivalent to amazon is a shadow organization bent on destroying the world.
Inspector Gadget (2015) (free on youtube!) The main plot isn't super exciting, but it only takes a few episodes to get obsessed with the dynamic between the show's star-crossed teenage nemeses (who are DEFINITELY crushing on each other.)
Milo Murphy's Law (disney+) a spinoff of Phineas and Ferb, that features the voice talents of Weird Al and Sabrina Carpenter. Has a fun overarching plot, adorable premise, and every single character is a blorbo. There's also prime whump/angst opportunities for fics, if you're into that kind of stuff.
Hamster and Gretel (disney+) another silly PnF spinoff. Has a ton of lovable characters and a mysterious overarching plot. Funky good times are sure to ensue.
Mighty Med (disney+) every joke in this disney sitcom feels like someone says "i am going to punch you in the stomach" so you say "okay?" and then they slap you upside the head and you go "oh okay that was it then?" and THEN they punch you in the stomach. with laughter. Every joke lands perfectly. It's also about a hospital for superheroes, so if you think that sounds cool you should definitely check it out. It's only two seasons!
Once Upon a Time in Wonderland (disney+) (persuasion post) Self-contained, single season, standalone spinoff of Once Upon a Time. If you're a fan of OUaT and haven't watched this, you're missing out on an absolute delight where every character is a blorbo, there's a couple different love stories BUT the primary focus is a platonic friendship between the male and female leads, AND you get a lot of fun cameos from the main show. If you haven't watched OUaT, you can still enjoy this and have a funky good tiem!
Jonas (disney+) It's two seasons long, but the first season is the most unhinged hilarity and ridiculous jokes that altered my brain chemistry, while the second season is a tv drama for no reason? It's a tv show about the Jonas Brothers. nuff said.
🩷Movies:
Oscar (1991) ($4 on many sites) A mafia boss' father's dying wish is for him to not be a mafia boss, but on the day of his interview for a job as a banker, everything goes wrong in the most hilarious way possible. Hijinks ensue. It's a movie you've got to pay attention to, it's incredibly hilarious (to the point where my familys' entire vocabulary was shaped by this film) it has Sylvester Stallone and Tim Curry, and it's an underrated gem. (Followers, be warned that even though it's never too inappropriate, it's also not the most family friendly movie in the world.)
A Very Jonas Christmas Movie (disney+) exactly what it sounds like, but ten times more unhinged than you could possibly imagine. It's the only movie I've ever watched where the primary driving focus is the complicated relationship between adult siblings. Even if you don't like the Jonas Brothers, there's a lot of other celebrity cameos, so if you're a fan of Will Farrell, Chloe Bennet, or Andrew Barth Feldman, you will still have a wonderful time.
🩷Music (spotify playlists linked:)
Jonas Brothers (playlist) twenty years of bangers. This playlist, at 106 songs and five and a half hours, is borne of me going through their entire discography, including solo acts and side projects from the hiatus and at present, tv and movie soundtracks, and yes, even Franklin's music (see below.)
Franklin Jonas (playlist) The Jonas Brothers' younger brother writes his own music too and there's not much but it's literally so good I love him. It started out sounding pretty much exactly like you'd expect from the kid who got left out of the family boyband, but overtime his music has become a lot more polished and refined. This playlist of my faves is only eight songs, and less than half an hour so it's a quick listen!
🩷Works by me? Is that allowed?
