I have been thinking about Bugsnax constantly for almost a year now, and liked it for longer. I knew the Shy Weenyworm was a Chicago-style hot dog. So how did it take this long to make the connection between the word "Shy" and the name "Chicago".

The connection has been mentioned on the wiki since two months after the game came out, even.

SHY WEENYWORM

Shy Weenyworm is, conceptually, I think one of the funniest Bugsnax there is! You see, the standard Weenyworm loves ketchup. Its description is “A lazy little worm, it’s only motivated by ketchup.” Shy Weenyworm, however, despite being a Weenyworm as well, is the opposite! “A lazy little worm, it’s only motivated by its hatred of ketchup.” But why? Why?!

It is because Shy Weenyworm is no ordinary hot dog! It is not actually particularly shy. In fact, it may even seem like it wants to draw attention with all the toppings it’s wearing! The “Shy” in its name actually comes from “Chicago”. You know, the place with The Bean! If you asked developers Young Horses, they would say “We Are From Chicago”, because that is their base of operation.

Hot dogs have a very strong impact on the people of Chicago. The classic Chicago Dog typically has mustard, tomato, pickled pepper, pickled pickle, and astonishingly bright green relish, on a poppy seed bun. This is sometimes called “dragged through the garden”, which is a bit ironic considering it’s the plain Weenyworm that lives in the garden, while Shy Weenyworm is sealed in an ancient burial chamber for reasons unknown! Did they think they had killed it? Those fools.

Anyway, it is generally accepted in Chicago that ketchup does not belong on a hot dog. And I think they are passionate about it, to get that reputation! I don’t think it’s limited to just Chicago-style ones, either. This applies to Weenyworm because ketchup makes it absolutely furious! Since there are two found in the same location, it is quite easy to catch one by covering it with ketchup, causing them to knock each other out in a fit of rage!

I think it is so funny that they put this intensely Chicago reference in the game, and it is a really funny thing to put in regardless. Bugsnax is a great source of representation all around, and that is not includes representing those who do and those who don’t put ketchup on hot dogs!
