Commonly kept in small bowls or tanks without filtration or heating, the Siamese fighter actually needs a minimum tank size of 20l (~5 US gallons) and REQUIRE filtration and heating. Please do not get rose tail bettas as their tails are especially prone to the rays breaking.

Other long tailed betta types (i.e. tail types other than plakat and perhaps spade tails) are debatably ethical. I have never observed a plakat betta thus I cannot give an account on the difference between activity levels and health of plakats vs other tail types.

Siamese fighters should NEVER be kept with the same species unless for breeding purposes (in which case the should be closely monitered and the female removed after mating.)

Another fish kept in unfiltered bowls. Fancy goldfish require 400l (~105 US gallon) and common and comets require 600l (160 US gallon).

Redtail sharkminnow (Epalzeorhynchos bicolor)

Highly aggressive towards their own species (they CANNOT be kept with other redtailed black sharks nor similar looking fish), neither a shark nor a minnow and CRITICALLY ENDANGERED in the wild (however there is a very large captive bred population thus they are common in the aquarium trade.) They grow to 16cm (6 inches) and require 200l (~55 US gallons).

I’ve just been to the fish farm which cheered me up a bit, pretty lyretail fighter, but I need a tank.  They had a second hand tank for sale with a fighter gravel and plant, but I don’t think it’s actually big enough but I want a fighter fish (plus I think you need heater and filter for them) I need to look more into this...

They also had tiny baby terrapins which looked like smol grumpies. I have got to stop falling for cute aquatic creatures.
