It’s a 1987 movie by Sibi Malayil.
There was a lot of sexism overall, but I would like to neglect that for the moment, keeping in mind the period in which this film had come out.
The story line was brilliant. I love how Sibi Malayil tries to drive consciousness into the herd mentality. But the sad truth is, little has changed since then.
The muthassi in the film reminded me of my own grandmother. My gran is not a bad person, I love her. But the mentality, the tone, the way of speech, the cursing and playing the victim - was this the stereotypical grandmother? I wonder if my gran was influenced by movies such as these. She is a television aficionado.
If a society is determined to continue a practice that is clearly not in favor of the well-being of anybody, one must have the courage to deal with it rather than bow before it. Even if it is to leave as Gopinathan did. Takes a lot of spine to walk away from toxic conditions. Choices can be tough, but one must be tougher.
