Whumptober 2025 Masterlist
Aurelis Masterlist
my first snippet featuring Vivian! And my final Whumptober piece for the year! I hope you guys had as much fun reading them as I did writing them!
Aurelis glared up at the Red Eclipse. her power orbs glowed faintly in the darkness, the full moon created a silvery outline behind her, and her dark cape fluttered in the night breeze.
She held a ball of red energy in her hand. Aurelis had been hit with similar ones several times tonight, and she was sure if she was blasted with them just one more time, she wouldn’t make it out of this fight.
Red held a hand up to her ear; she must have been wearing a comm of some kind. Within seconds, the ball fizzled out into nothing. She landed on the rooftop, taking careful steps toward the ice hero.
“What? You gotta make it slow?” Aurelis demanded, though her voice cracked, “is that it? Huh? Some kind of killing tradition in your murder club?”
She knelt down next to her, her eyes sweeping over her figure.
“Yes, I’m hurt,” Aurelis deadpanned, “excellent job. You should be very proud.”
Red Eclipse touched a finger to her temple. Aurelis felt a rush of memories come flooding to the front of her mind, like tabs opening on a browser.
Red Eclipse’s violet eyes widened almost imperceptibly. She let a small line of crimson energy trickle from her fingertip, right at Aurelis’ forehead. Within seconds, such a lethargy had come over her that all thoughts of the fight faded out of her mind, leaving only one dominating desire in her head: sleep.
Aurelis wasn’t going to give in. She refused to be influenced.
…
Aurelis stirred, cocooned in something warm and soft. She blinked slowly and tried to sit up as she waited for her vision to clear.
Every movement hurt, but her wounds didn’t feel as exposed as they had a minute ago… how much time had passed since falling asleep? Her surroundings came into view, and she noticed the bandages up and down her arms and chest. No doubt there were more across her legs, and judging by the scratchy feeling there, some on her face as well.
The room she lay in looked like something out of a gothic novel. Dark curtains obscured a Victorian bay window, and rows upon rows of books lined deep, wooden shelves. Upon a nightstand sat a med kit and a velvet lamp, and the bed had intricate carvings on the post and headboard.
Aurelis stiffened when she heard the floor creaking outside. She formed an ice shard in her hand. The door swung open of its own accord, and her assassin stepped inside with a tray.
“Relax.” she ordered.
Aurelis threw the shard, which Red Eclipse stopped with a red energy shield. She approached the bed and set the tray in Aurelis’ lap. On it sat two cinnamon rolls and a glass of milk.
Aurelis blinked, confused. How did she know she liked cinnamon rolls? It wasn’t a common meal served to prisoners, right?
Red Eclipse stood expectantly. Instead of her suit, she wore a black turtleneck sweater and dark pants. Notably, she wasn’t wearing any shoes in the house. Aurelis tilted her head; that wasn’t a common rule either…
Aurelis’ boots lay in the corner of the room, along with the rest of her suit.
“Can you lift your fork?” Red Eclipse asked suddenly.
“Um… I think so?” Aurelis said.
“Show me.”
Aurelis took the first bite of a cinnamon roll. It tasted just like the ones her mom would make. She swallowed uncomfortably.
“Have you been stalking me?” she asked with wide eyes.
“No.”
“Do you have a file on me?”
“We’re building one, yes.”
“And that includes my mom’s cinnamon roll recipe?” she asked, finally facing her.
“You have no idea who I am, do you?” Red asked.
“Should I?”
Red Eclipse folded her arms across her chest.
“No…”
Red Eclipse stood around awkwardly; Aurelis had never seen her be awkward. When the meal was finished, red energy carried it off. Red grabbed a photo album from the drawer in the nightstand and shoved it into Aurelis’ hands. She left with the tray floating behind her.
Aurelis stared at the door in confusion before opening the album. She saw pictures of two little girls playing in a park. One she recognized, the other she didn’t.
One girl was slightly older than the other, by the looks of things. In one photo, she had her arms out at the bottom of a slide while the younger one was at the top. In another, she was pushing the smaller girl on a swing. The third was blurry, and the older girl’s eyes were red from the glare; oddly, though, the younger girl’s eyes didn’t have the same effect.
Aurelis shakily flipped through more pages. There was the younger girl at her first day of kindergarten. The older girl could be seen from the bus stop. She had no backpack or lunchbox. She was just watching the younger one get into her parents’ car.
The little girl was a bit older now. It was her first time learning to ice skate. Aurelis remembered that; she fell at least three times. The older girl stood in the background, her blunt bangs peeking through her hat.
Every milestone in Aurelis’ life had been documented, and in every photo, the other girl could be seen; sometimes interacting, but mostly just watching.
Aurelis looked up at Red. She hadn’t even heard her come in.
“… You were stalking me?” Aurelis asked nervously.
“How many siblings do you have?” she asked.
“One.”
“Really?”
“Well, my brother always went on about our ‘sister’, but I thought that was just his imaginary friend… My parents would get quiet whenever he brought her up, so he eventually stopped.”
Red Eclipse stood there, not saying a word.
“Oh,” Aurelis blurted, “…you’re Vivian from the playground?”
