Another one of me. Funny enough, plaid print is coming back. A view of our gravel drive in the other direction. We lost that lowest step when it was paved. You can see all the mature trees in the background; this area was surrounded by forest preseves and had big trees everywhere. Very pretty. Notice also the side door. Houses around this time always seemed to have more than one entrance but not always in what today we’d assume is the most logical location. This door led to a stairway landing where you could go right, down more stairs into the basement, or left, to a door that led into the kitchen. There was also a small screened door that opened to the side of the fridge. I assume that was for ice delivery back in the day. Anyway about the side doors. These days homes like mine have a front door, and back patio door, typically, with a door from the garage into the house. Sometimes the patio door is on the side. My grandmothers house had the interior garage door, side door which was used as a main entrance off the driveway, another door on the other side of the house (that I never saw used), and another door to the backyard which we I recall was through the laundry room.
I never understood why there needed to be side doors though, esp if you had more than one exit to the house in the back. House designs these days tend to have a formal front entrance and then a nice open view to the backyard where a patio typically is. I think the big patio doors have replaced the ‘picture windows’ from 80 years ago.
