Our Neolithic ancestors knew, even if they couldn't explain why, the sun's relationship to the earth affected their lives. They studied the movements of the sun, the Moon and the planets to try and understand why there was a season of long warm days and a season of short, cold days and between these two days when day and night were of equal length. From their observations came four festivals to mark the year. These four markers were anticipated, recorded and celebrated. In fact they became important religious occasions when the gods were praised and prayed to. With the coming of Christianity the Summer Solstice became St. John's Eve.. Also known as Bonfire Night, Time Féile Eoin, Óiche an Tine Cháimh it is still celebrated in some parts of Ireland.
