Rice is camping out on her own in the maybe-haunted definitely-abandoned stables at the very back of the school grounds, yet to be renovated and free for her to use. She didn't completely disappear. She made sure to tell Hishiama, just so someone responsible knows where she is. She didn't count on Bourbon tracking her down and interrupting her. But maybe she should have. Bourbon always seems to find her, after all.

Until he hears something vaguely to his right, and he turns to look, and his eyes land on something he didn't expect. On the other side of the plane, past Patrik, his two rookie goaltenders sit together—but one of them is missing. No, he's not. "Shh," Jakub hisses through his lips, "Quiet."

It's a buzzing feeling under his skin that Lane has trouble describing to anyone who isn't an athlete. Most other hockey players will get it in the offseason, or even during bye week. When he expresses the itch to get back on the ice, let's say, in August—nobody questions it. Christmas Day, though, that'll get you the raised eyebrow. Even other players will see it as too much. But Ivan didn't. (or, seven days with Lane and Ivan.)
