What is it about Jason Todd, especially as Robin but also just in general, that makes otherwise fairly talented writers take a massive nosedive in quality??
Mark Waid is one of my favorite writers in the modern comics scene. His 2016 Black Widow run? One of the runs that got me into comics, it's been a favorite of mine for years. Batman & Robin: Year One? Stunning, it's my favorite recent comic, the emotional beats are really good & I especially love Dick in it. I really enjoyed World's Finest: Teen Titans, personally, and heck, even what I've read of Underworld Unleashed is pretty good. But then you read his recent History of the DC Universe or the latest Justice League Unlimited and the Jaybin hate just sticks out like a neon sign.
Ed Brubaker is another one who I tend to really like. He did fantastic work on Captain America in the mid to late 2000s, he wrote Winter Soldier (2012) and broke my heart into a million tiny pieces, I like most of what I've read from his run on Batman, but then you get the Jaybin flashback in Batman #600 and it's just. why.
Chip Zdarsky's Daredevil is one of my favorite comic runs of all time and yet the same person who wrote it, including what's possibly my favorite scene in all of comics (the confessional scene in Daredevil (2019) #1) also wrote Cheer?? Somehow??
There's not really a point to this post, I just keep being let down by writers that I would think were better than this when Jason gets involved and I'm really, really tired of it.
