Melbourne City
Hi everyone!
Yarra river and Melbourne
I spent a few days in Melbourne, exploring the city and making some friends. I had a really good time there. Melbourne is big pulsing city with full of people. Its population is about 3 700 000, so it's a very big city and it's also the capital of Victoria state. The so called downtown is only a few square miles large. Originally that was only Melbourne city, but as time went by the city has grown larger. The big houses and the skyscrapers can only be found in downtown. The other parts of the city are mainly suburbs.
I went to Melbourne by train. There is a direct line between Traralgon and Melbourne so it was easy to get there. After arriving at Southern Cross station I had a lunch and I went to find my hostel. That was the place where I stayed during my time in Melbourne. It was a really nice hostel, especially for backpackers. I got a bed there, and it cost me only a few bucks so it was also very cheap. My room was clean enough, but sometimes it was noisy, because there was a tram stop right next to the hostel. During the day I usually went out for sightseeing. The first day I started my sightseeing tour from Federation square which is a nice place surrounded with really bad looking futuristic buildings. Those buildings are really ruined that nice little square. Anyway, I had a coffee there and continued to the Melbourne Aquarium which was pretty good, but the ticket was expensive. I have seen some nice animals there like: Giant turtles, Sharks, Snakes and even Penguins. The building was very big compared to the Campona Tropicarium (Budapest) and there was so much to see there, so I spent 2 hours with just watching animals. From there I went to the Eureka Skydeck which is the tallest skyscraper in Melbourne. The building has 91 floors. There was a really nice view of the city from up there. I could walk around and see the whole city and the ocean too. Took some nice pictures there. After I came down I walked around the downtown and saw the parliament building and I went to a local supermarket to buy something for dinner then I went back to the hostel. There I met with my roommates and we went down for a beer to the pub next door. I met with an Irish, a Dutch and a Brazilian guy. They were very nice fellows. We talked about each other's culture and customs. We also shared experiences about Australia, and met with some locals down in the pub, they told us stories about the country, so it was an awesome evening. I even tried "snakebite" which is a tasty but strong drink made of cider and other drinks. Here are some pics about my first day.

The next day I went up to the Flagstaff gardens. It's a nice park in the northern part of downtown and from there I went to the Melbourne museum which was worth seeing, because there were many exhibitions there which were pretty amazing. For instance the evolution exhibition or the history of Melbourne exhibition. So I spent a few hours there too, exploring the museum. I also wanted to see the Queen Victoria market, but unfortunately it was closed, so I went back to downtown. The traffic in Melbourne is very dangerous, you have to watch yourself while crossing the road, and the pedestrians are always rushing as well. The city was full of businessmen and tourists. The pace of life seemed to be very fast so I wouldn't live there, but it was a very nice city from an eye of a tourist. That evening we came together once again in the pub and had a beer and the next day I left to Traralgon.

See you next time!
The next post will be about the Australian Captial Canberra.
