A few Posts back I was mentioning USA Signet Classics books. I was able to find a few pictures of the ones I studied and used when I was doing GCSE A Level (1982-84). The distinctive covers were by the Graphic Artist, Milton Glaser. We studied 'Macbeth' and 'The Winter's Tale' for the O&CUEB in English Literature. But, one of our English Lit. Teachers also took us to see 'King Lear' at the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) at Stratford-upon-Avon and 'Much Ado About Nothing' in an RSC Touring production at The Empire Theatre, Liverpool. I read 'The Tempest' for my own pleasure.

Signet Classics Books.

I tend to think of these as cheap, workmanlike editions of the Classics (& some lesser works) that came from the USA. There was more of a interest in them by the 1970's. Certainly, all my GCE O Level & GCE A Level English Literature 'Shakespeare' studies were done from Signet Classics Shakespeare texts - 'Macbeth', 'The Winter's Tale' & 'King Lear' amongst them. The translations are very good & the Notes excellent. It was only at Seminary & University that we used the 'New Penguin Shakespeare' & 'Pelican Shakespeare' editions of the texts.

I got this old copy of Vanity Fair because someone set a table of books in front of their house for people to take what they wanted. I've never heard anyone's thoughts on it, but I'm reading mostly classics this summer so this may be one of them.
