Silent Evolution - By Chen Ariel Nachman
Into the Blue Again
I saw this on National Geographic the other day, an underwater sculpture park. What I like about it is that they called it a "political statement" meant to lure tourists away from the fragile coral reefs. Instead of art going political, it's politics going art. Not to mention it coincides nicely with the UN climate talks being held in nearby Cancún.
Jason deCaires Taylor is the artist, "Silent Evolution" is the title of the work. It's part of the brand new MUSA (Museo Subaquatico de Arte).
The work isn't complete. There are four hundred sculptures with more to be added when funding becomes available. Each of the faces has a name, created from the cast of an actual model. Part of the development of the project will occur over the next few hundred years as sea life reclaims the floor.

A needle that looks like hay. A hay-like needle. Of death. A hay-like needle of death in a haystack of, er, statues.
If you happen to be a creature of living stone... the perfect hiding place.
Oh, Jason deCaires Taylor, what have you done??
