Smart Necklace With Chin Recognition and Silent Language

SpeeChin Smart necklace. It is based on chin movement, captures skin deformations on the neck and face, and recognizes simple phrases in English and Chinese.

Imagine sitting in a conference room or library where you can hear a pin drop and saying “Siri, what’s the weather tomorrow” might not be appropriate. What happens when a person can’t speak or has to be quiet, but wants to give commands to a smart device?

Cheng Zhang, an assistant professor of information science at Cornell University, and Ruidong Zhang, a doctoral student, designed a necklace called “SpeeChin“. Based on jaw movements, it captures “skin deformations on the neck and face” to recognize silent language, and can now recognize simple phrases in English and Chinese.

We were talking about silent language today and how some gestures we (Americans) used may not be carried out in the same context in other countries.

Silent Language

Silent Language   Touch is a language spoken softly, tenderly, with love… or shouted, harsh, violent.   It conveys trust, comfort, warmth, compassion, pain, hatred, fear.   It questions, answers, explains, reminds.   Touch can express dominance, submission, acceptance, rejection.   It can be crass, delicate, lewd, gracious.   But at the end it is silent, cold   meaning nothing more than to move on   to let go in person in heart in mind.
