Hi, sorry if I'm bothering you. I'm a graduating this summer and I still have no idea what to major in. I was just looking through majors and being a film major caught my eye. I like writing stories and photography but that probably has nothing to do with what a film major actually does. I'm planning to just go to a community college to get my gen-eds done, but what's required for a film major? Are there specific classes I have to take during my first two years? What is your experience like?
Hey no worries at all! I think writing stories and photography are some great hobbies that puts one’s mindset into film studies. Some colleges, particularly at the undergrad level, have pretty different film programs, some leaning more towards filmmaking and others towards film theory. My college offers the film studies major, which focuses more on theory, history, and writing. My introductory courses were the general introduction to film studies and a film & media theory course. My other requirements include two cinema history classes (one for early and another for more modern times), international cinema, a lab practical (i.e. screenwriting, production, etc.), a senior thesis, and six other electives that align with specific concentrations.
I have loved every film class I’ve taken so far and I’m looking forward to all the other ones I have to take. Film theory can be pretty wacky but it’s also so interesting and it trains your mind to notice very specific formats and aesthetics that we tend to take for granted when experiencing film/television/media. I would definitely encourage you to take some intro classes!! :D
