Finished corset mockup today, and I'm happy with it. Just in time to find out that Silk Baron is doing their quarterly scrap sale tomorrow (so says their twitter). :D
Now researching materials. Will be trying tutu.com coutil* and pretty much undecided as to everything else yet. I do know that I want 1/2" flat steels. Do I go with corsetmaking (I hate their 1/4" flats, but the 1/2" are ok) or try Dragontown? But Dragontown only has un-tipped lacing, so do I want to split up my order or get some fancy cones or cord ends from Fire Mountain Gems? If I have to tip my own laces, I'm certainly not using plastic tips. Mm, black grommets, yes. And bone casing, binding, waist tape, do I want to do a lining? So many things to consider.
I think I'm going to embroider the hip gores with Art Deco Egyptianesque lotus flower designs. To perfectly go with my Memphis decal 1923 Singer 127 I'm making the corset with. Embroidery should lay flat enough to not show under the dress and still add some visual interest. No final plans for this yet...haven't even decided on fabric color, can't get to ahead of myself.
*I'm going to order 1/2 yard of coutil for my Dad to experiment with as a paint surface. It occurred to me that it might work pretty well given its strength and fine, smooth surface, so that with time it might sag less than a more usual linen or duck canvas that has more bias give. Because oh how it does sag after 50 or 100 years. And then in the middle of this conversation Dad told me about how it's possible to, basically and far understating the technical difficulties, peel the paint film off its original canvas and apply it to a new surface. I was floored.
