Comme si - silk slip dress
sewing moral quandary:
Spawn got to pick the fabrics when we went to The Large Store That Is Closing. One of her picks: what I thought to be a pink polyester satin.
Newp, it's pink silk charmeuse -- hot, Barbie Doll, Marilyn Monroe pink silk -- from silk worms -- charmeuse. It was dirt cheap, but it's real silk. Now we got a problem, because it's insanity to use this sort of fabric on a four-year-old. She is active, and she will grow out of that dress in a year. Polyester satin? The price is right for any confection of her dreams. Silk? No.
Problem: She picked it, and I feel like I've got to use it on her. However, above problem. It might hear about her plans for the day and disintegrate in protest.
Solution: My parental unit advised me to make workwear and make something else for her with poly satin later.
Problem: I have not worn that shade of pink since I was 8, and I have no desire to do so. Using it for me is a waste, because I dry heave at the sight of it.
Potential Ethical solution: Buy spawn the pink polyester of her dreams later, but for now, use the silk charmeuse to line the Me and Mini-Me Easter dresses I'm making -- she picked that fabric too (a pale pink designer linen with hearts, also cheap as chips in the fire sale -- what can I say, Spawn has TASTE). The majority of the silk fabric will go into a dress that I will wear for years, it feels nice on the skin, and I don't have to look at it. She will get the same experience, for as long as she fits into the dress.
I have a few days to figure it out, but I'm trying not to a) waste a commodity; b) break the kid's trust, even though she probably already forgot about the fabric; c) get caught dead wearing it myself.
