     Ilyana let out a small gasp when she saw a familiar top hat bobbing down the street. Normally, she wasn’t the one to remember a face she’d only seen a few times. In her business, it was hard to remember every person who came in and out of the cabaret, but this one was special. In fact, if it hadn’t been for him, she wasn’t quite sure where she’d be now. She wasn’t sure where anyone in Folsense would be now. Well, they’d probably still be here in town, of course, but she wasn’t exactly thinking of any physical place. 

     Sure, it was quite a shock when the announcement went out; that most of what the denizens of Folsense knew to be real had changed long, long ago- how could it not be- but at the same time, she was grateful. If it hadn’t been for that discovery, she and everyone else would still be living in their own delusions, wouldn’t they? Which couldn’t be very health. And if she wanted to get the best out of her years, she needed to keep herself in top shape! Honestly, she thought she’d never see the professor again, and now that he was here, she needed to get the most out of the chance as possible!

        “Oh well hello there, tall, dark, and handsome! It’s been a while,          hasn’t it? You left so quickly last time, you didn’t even get to          catch a show! Oh, but that’s all right. We’re under new management          now, and the new boss might just be able to find a discounted ticket          for someone as dapper as yourself.”

    He felt like it was too easy to walk into the university, too easy to walk up to his brother’s office. It was after school hours, so there was nary a soul around. Alas, Descole found himself pausing at the door before raising a hand to knock a few times. Honestly, he wasn’t expecting the greatest reaction from the one he had planned on visiting.

A written cry for help to the good Professor in a simple envelope.

"Dear Mr. Layton

Tales of your heroics and cleverness have reached even the lonely little village of Wildebarrow.

I know I have no business mailing such an accomplished and surely busy professor such as yourself, but I'm afraid I've been left with little choice.

As you may or may not know, Wildebarrow is a small forest-side village whose economy is based nearly entirely on hunting. The forest has served us well for generations, but recently odd and terrifying happenings have occurred. Many of our hunters have returned from the forest claiming to have seen monstrous tracks, unnaturally toppled trees, and even a towering monster that left these marks on the land.

Most of our hunters are now too frightened to return to the forest, and Wildebarrow is suffering because of it. Our local law enforcement is neither big enough nor brave enough to face the problem, and outside officials refuse to aid us in our plight, believing it to be a hoax.

Please, Professor Layton, we are in desperate need of help! If you could shed light on this mystery and cast away the fear plaguing our village, we would forever be in your debt!

[Another seemingly uneventful day at work; Celeste had been down in the archives, searching for more information regarding the experiment ten years ago that had cost her sister's life. There was nothing added to the reports, as most of the incident was still being covered up, but the redhead was still determined to find more information on her sister's death, even if nothing turned up for the longest time...ten years, to be exact. Ten years of not discovering a single lead on her sister's death other than the scientist known as Dimitri Allen and Claire's old sweetheart...Hershel Layton.]

[Eventually, she was called upstairs for "receptionist duties"; if there were any visitors, Celeste would need to tell them which department to visit, blah blah blah. Reluctantly, she set down the case files and headed upstairs, certain that this would make her day that much more boring. That is, until she saw the man she'd been wanting to see all of her life.]

[Hershel Layton--he was right there, in the flesh, still sporting that damn hat that Claire had given him, like some sort of trophy. Celeste couldn't resist the fury that made itself present as she clenched her fists, though she attempted, to the best of her ability, not to make it present as she spoke with the visitor; there were other officers around, after all.]

...It's you...! [Unable to control herself, Celeste slammed the desk in front of her.] Hershel Layton...you have a lot of nerve, you know. Just what exactly are you doing here, professor? [The redhead made certain to address him as professor condescendingly; he definitely didn't deserve that position, especially after what he did to Claire.]

[Finally, Claire was on the right track; the very first place she'd wanted to visit after realizing that she was finally back, solidified, and though she still had a few leftover...side-effects from the machine, she was in Hershel's present; and that meant...they had a chance to be together, without their time being riddled with secretive collaborations on the demolition of London and time-travel machinery. They...had a chance to speak again, even after Claire had been certain that she would have returned to her time, having been killed by the blast in the laboratory.]

[Claire couldn't help the hesitation before she knocked on the door to Hershel's office; what would he say, or do? Would he reject her very presence, or...what if he didn't want anything to do with her anymore? Her fist trembled, hovering above the door, and then--three steady knocks, each one causing her heart to pound. Maybe he wasn't even here--perhaps this was a mere waste of time--]

[And then, she heard the door creak.]

You know, sneaking out in the middle of the night to explore London because your adopted father never takes you on adventures with him and his assistant or apprentice or whatever the heck was one of those things that sounded really good in your head, but when you tried it out? Let's just say things really didn't go the way Flora had planned! 

First of all, it was dark at night. Secondly, it was kind of hard to find adventure when everyone besides yourself was asleep! And last but not least, sneaking back into the house when you realized your plan was a dud was kind of hard when your flashlight had run out of batteries and you'd forgotten to take extra with you. Gosh dang it.

So here she was, doing a really awful job of walking back inside and not tripping over everything as she made her way back to her room. Seriously, by the time she got back there, she'd probably run into every single thing that it was possible to run into. She had made as MUCH noise as she possibly could have and she didn't even mean to. Let's just hope the professor didn't hear her, even though he probably did. BEING SNEAKY IS HARD. 

With the best hopes in mind, she threw a blanket over her head and collapsed in bed and pretended to sleep. Brilliant.
