Little bit of Breakaway Percy POV just because!
Will clocks it first. The difference. Something in the summer changed things, and that change first starts to show its face at our back to school thing we throw every year.
Five shots deep Finn hooks his fingers in Logan’s belt loops and pulls him between his thighs while he’s leaning back against the counter. Three rums deep Logan tilts his head back laughing at something Finn’s said and puts his hands on his shoulders.
“Okay,” Will says. “Okay…”
When I glance over, he’s watching, too.
“Okay,” I say.
The next morning, I’ve got one of those vodka headaches that only a nice sun-soak on the green can help. Put my hat over my face and bundle my shirt under my head as a pillow and let the sunshine heat me up. Silver’s beached on her side, hot fur pressed along my ribs and one back leg propped over my arm so I can rub her belly. Means I get a flurry of tail thumps against my shoulder as my alert that someone we know is walking towards us.
“Don’t move, oh my God,” Cassie’s voice comes, and I know she’s taking a photo.
“How about now?” I ask after a moment.
“Yeah, yeah.”
I push my hat up to the blinding sight of her sitting down on our blanket and leaning down to press about a hundred kisses to Silver’s cheek. She pets over her lab-tattooed ear as gently as ever.
“Oh, you’re so toasty, Sil-Sil,” she coos. “Are you so toasty? So happy? What a pretty girl you are in the sun, look at you, cutie…”
I would like to point out that I could also be pretty in the sun. If she’d look up.
“Hey,” I say.
She does look up at me then, Silver kissing her chin. Do her eyes go to my chest? Yes, yes they do, thank you.
“Hey,” she says, and leans back on her elbows. “You know—” Squints one eye shut against the sun. “—what was so funny last night?”
I sit up enough that I can put my hat on her head. Give the bill a little pull over her pretty, shaded eyes. “Tell me.”
