The Rasmus - Silver Night
Dark Matters: Individual Track Review
Paradise: Okay I was giddy about this song when it first came out and had it on repeat for a few weeks, then let it sit for a tiny bit and even now it’s still a great track and I’m still as giddy as I was when I first heard it. It has an older Rasmus, mainly Dead Letters/Hide From the Sun feel to it.
Something In The Dark: Okay so I’m getting major New World vibes from this?? Like that’s the strange thing I’ve noticed about these tracks, they sound more-so like what you would hear on Lauri’s solo album rather than The Rasmus. Not necessarily a bad track, but doesn’t have that Rasmus feel to
Wonderman: I AM SO GLAD I WAITED FOR THIS SONG. It is much heavier than their old stuff and yet sooo reminiscent of say, Dead Letters and Black Roses. I really love how this song flows and funny enough, the repetitive part is my favourite in this track. I’ve always loved when they layered parts, so the last chorus is fantastic. A great track.
Nothing: It’s very strange hearing the opening right after Wonderman, it opens your eyes and makes you pay attention a bit more. I love the effects in this and that beat is pretty great. Musically this is a fantastic track, not too sure about the lyrics but.-shrug-
Empire: I was really intrigued by the opening of this song, this definitely has a Rasmus feel. I know the personal connection to this song by both Lauri and Pauli which makes me partial to the song as well, I love the lyrics and I love the bridge and how it’s so mellow and then goes into an almost hip-hop track? It is such an interesting and fresh style and yet it still says The Rasmus.
Crystaline- I’m getting major Black Roses vibes from this song! Like Dangerous Kind/Your Forgiveness, but mixed with It’s Your Night from their self-titled album? Even hearing some Paradise in here. It’s like a blend of the best bits of each album IN ONE SONG.
Black Days: Okay when I first heard this I was ‘meh’, but this is a great tack too! I love acoustic as y’all know so the verses were fantastic. I almost feel a Sail Away vibe to it. And then of course you have the modern pop elements added in too.
Silver Night: Okay so this is like, coldplay meets maroon five meets THE RASMUS. It still has their feel to it, especially with the ostinato and gosh I love this track. I often catch myself humming it at work.
Delirium- A theme I’ve noticed in this album is starting off soft and acoustic and going into something much more experimental. This could easily be a dance track.
Dragons into Dreams- I had SO MUCH HOPE FOR THIS. And I was let down. But, as another review said, The Rasmus does have a tendency to end their albums with a very calm/somber song, and I guess from the title I didn’t get that vibe. It’s actually a very optimistic song and while not my favourite track by any means, the second listen redeemed it for me. I’m sure once I listen to the album another 20 times I’ll end up falling in love with it.
Final thoughts: Okay, so I will say their versatility and experimentation are truly what makes The Rasmus, well, The Rasmus. They are true artists in that respect. As an album, this is a great archive of all of their best bits of previous albums in brand new, still fresh tracks. It’s something that I can’t even explain but it works SO. WELL. FOR. THEM. I think this album might get them the US recognition they deserve.
