Edie Faulkner Wootton - Silver Award Unit 2 Part E - Leadership Project Review
What leadership skills have you developed?
I think that I have developed a lot of different leadership skills over the course of doing my silver arts award. for example one skill that I think I have developed is organization. during my leadership project I had to use my organization skills to organize all the different props nd costumes which is something that I haven't really done before. being able to practice these skills so often helped me improve them and find different ways to be more organized, for example, creating a props and costumes list to help me keep track of all the props and costumes that we and which ones we needed to buy or find.
I think another leadership skill that I have developed is speaking in front of and to others. I think I was able to develop this skill more during my arts challenge as I had to communicate a lot with other people while I was on set while operating the camera. while being DOP I had to not only communicate with the director about how the shot looked and if there was anything they thought needed changing but I also worked with the boom operator and the lights operator to make sure that the lights looked good and lit the shot well and that the lights and the boom mic could not be seen in shot. because of this it meant that i was able to develop my communication skills.
What have you learned about being a good leader?
I have learned that being a good leader is not just about talking to other people, but also about incorporating their ideas into your own as they can improve the idea more than before. I have also learned that it is better when you communicate with everyone else more clearly and make sure that everyone understands what they are doing so that there is no confusion which can help to save time.
Refer back to your original project plan, did anything happen differently to what you planned? if so what and why?
I don't think that a lot happened differently to the plan. however, one thing that we did have to change was the prop that the main villain had which was his weapon which we had to replace quickly as we were not allowed to use a fake gun so we had to quickly replace it so we could continue with shooting. to stop this happening again we made sure that everything else that we using such as certain props or costumes were ok with the transport museum.
Is there anything you’d do differently in the future if you were to run the project again?
if I were to run the project again in the future I think that I might try to see if I would be able to see if I could save money by trying to create and find different props and costumes instead buying them which we had to do with various props such as the laser pointer that we used as the “weapon” in our film. I think I would also try to learn about different parts and roles used to make a film more as I think it would not only be interesting to learn about but I also think it would be beneficial to me as a leader to know about other leadership roles needed on set.
What parts of your project plan worked well?
I think that a lot of the course went well, for example, we were able to find or create most of the costumes and props we needed by the time that we needed them to be on set. another example is that we were able to quickly think of solutions if there was a problem, an example of this is when one of dresses that we had ripped meaning we were unable to use it, but we were able to find a replacement for the dress and we sewed up the dress that had torn so that it was ok to be returned to the people we had borrowed it from.
Was there anything that didn’t work so well?
One thing that didn't go that well is that we realised we could not use a prop gun for the villains weapon so we had to quickly find a replacement for it. We were able to replace it with a laser pointer which we were able to make look futuristic.
What was your favourite part of the leadership project?
I think my favourite part of the leadership project was actually creating the props and costumes that we needed because I really enjoy art and this allowed me to develop these skills. I also enjoyed seeing and organising the costumes for the first time because it was really exciting to see the beginning of our film.
Which things did you find most challenging?
I think that I found bring on set making sure that all props and costumes were where they were supposed to be very challenging because it could take a long time and could be very tiring waiting for everything was ready for the shot.
What have you learnt about working effectively with other people?
I have learned that it can not only save time to work with other people, but it can also help to create new ideas which can be beneficial to the project.
What was the feedback from other people about your project and your role as a leader?
Zara - Edie was brilliant to work with. I watched her as she collaborated with me and helped assign costumes to the actors. I don’t know what Edie could improve on because she was pretty much onboardf with everything.
Chloe - You did a great job taking a lead in costumes for the film project. It was really great to see you take responsbility, as well as communicate and work others to research for and organise the various costumes needed for each era of our film, and make sure everything was ready for the shoot week. If you were to do it again next time, it would be great to see you take further responsibility in administration around the coordination of the costumes such as emailing participants. But on the whole well done!
Jack - It was lovely to see you develop your commuication and teamwork skills during your leadership project, you definitely grew in confidence which was great.
What do you think about this feedback?
it was really helpful to receive feedback because it helped me to understand what I was doing well and what I could improve to help make sure that all props and costumes looked good in the shot.
