The atmosphere is palpable, the titular house and grounds an evocative character (as it should be in a good gothic novel of suspense). While some of the human characterization isn't as effective, something that strikes me from this novel is the empathy. We have various disabilities as well as villainies treated with nuance and depth. If the romantic subplot is unsatisfying and the protagonist is nothing but a device, so what - I enjoyed the mystery and its surprising emotional depth.
