Castella, Corian, and Lilliana were all sitting down at the table in the Hold. Everyone else was either out or doing something else in the Hold.
The three siblings were all drinking tea, the still steaming pot set between them. The tea itself, as was typical of Castella’s blend, lightly sweet and floral.
“You say you made this yourself?”
Corian’s question was genuine enough. He would always try to break tension with good conversation.
“I call it mine, but it took help from others, figuring out what was safe and what wasn’t…”
Lilliana is silent for a moment. She takes a long sniff before sipping once again.
Castella knew that it was hard to get proper emotion from Lilliana. Others sometimes called her “Stone Heart” for her hard expression.
Even with this brief break in the silence, the air was still tense. This was the first time the three royals sat down together for quite some time. When a voice spoke once more, it was Lilliana’s.
“I intend to take you both home.”
Castella stops before taking another drink. Her hands begin shaking some. Corian seems less distressed.
“Lilliana, why are you in such a hurry to return? Me and Castella are Tarnished. We can’t just leave.”
“You know well why I have to take you home. There was already high tensions before you foolishly left to find Castella. Once you disappeared, our father has gone completely mad, and Lucilla is supporting his ravings. We need you, Corian.”
“Foolish? Lilliana, she was sent into the fog to perform an impossible task. I wanted to help her, be there for her. Do you even know what she’s been through?”
Castella’s hands are still shaking. She can’t speak up.
“What happened to her was terrible, but by Loran’s Mane, our kingdom is at stake here. Not to mention you left something else behind as well. A broken promise, and if you don’t amend it, then the Lords will come collect.”
“Don’t speak of that to me, don’t you EVER bring that up to me, Lilliana. You didn’t even see her off, and you lecture ME on broken promises? We DIED here, we have friends and family here now, and you want us to just ABANDON THAT?!”
Castella abruptly stands and slams both of her hands on the table, causing the pot and teacups to shift loudly on the table.
The other two siblings stop their arguing and look at her in shock.
Tears are streaming down her face as her lower lip quivers. She stood there for some time, as if there was something else she wanted to say.
The air is tense and quiet, silence sliced apart by sharp sobbing. When Castella couldn’t bring herself to say anything, she left the table and her siblings behind.
A small trail of gold followed as she left Roundtable Hold.
Corian rest his face in his palm, a single tear hidden in his glove.
“Who are we, Lily? We were… we were supposed to be the people she looks up to. Who she wants to be. But look at us…”
He himself stands and gathers the now empty cups.
“We can’t even sit through a single pot of tea without falling apart…”
He leaves Lilliana alone at the table. She looked to the center, and saw no light. It wasn’t so impressive as it was described to her.
“How could you take them from me?”
When she received no answer, Lilliana finally allowed herself something that she locked away for so long.
She allowed herself to cry.
