THE BLOOD SPATTERED BRIDE
1972, Spain
Original title: La novia ensangrentada
A just-married couple (Maribel Martín and Simón Andreu, 'Susan' and 'Husband', respectively) drive out to a large country estate for their honeymoon.
Far from eager to consummate the marriage, the young bride imagines being raped on her wedding night, followed by an increasing delusion that her husband wants to imprison and humiliate her.
When Susan meets and comes under the spell of the enigmatic Carmila (a variation on Sheridan Le Fanu's vampiress Carmilla Karnstein), she slowly comes to realize she is a lesbian, and since there is no place in her world for lesbianism, she is understandably anxious, filled with conflicting emotions - from fear of her husband to homicidal anger at being forced by society to marry against her will.
