Jinshu random story #1:
(sad story about Sima Yan 司馬炎 and his childhood friend Zhuge Jing 諸葛靓.)
"吳平,逃竄不出。武帝與靚有舊,靚姊又為琅邪王妃,帝知靚在姊間,因就見焉。靚逃於廁,帝又逼見之,謂曰:「不謂今日復得相見。」靚流涕曰:「不能漆身皮面,復睹聖顏!」詔以為侍中,固辭不拜,歸於鄉里,終身不向朝廷而坐。"
"After Wu was conquered, he hid and could not be found. Emperor Wu had a past relationship with Jing, and Jing's elder sister was the Princess of Langya. Knowing that Jing was with his sister, the Emperor went to see him. Jing fled to the latrine, but the Emperor forced him to see him again, saying, "I never expected to see you again today." Jing wept and said, "I cannot paint my body and face to avenge my family, so I have to be seen by Your Majesty again!" The Emperor issued an edict appointing him as a Palace Attendant, but he firmly declined the appointment and returned to his hometown, never sitting in the court again for the rest of his life"
漆身皮面: An anecdote about Yu Rang, an assassin in the Spring and Autumn period. To kill Zhao Xiangzi to avenge his former master Zhi Bo, he disfigured himself by having his skin covered with lacquer to create scars and sores. He pulled out his teeth and became a beggar in a market and to change his voice, he swallowed charcoal. Zhuge Jing use this to say that he is ashamed that he couldn't avenge his family members and has to meet Sima Yan today.
-They were childhood friends in Luoyang. When Zhuge Dan rebel against Sima Zhao, he sent his son Jing to Wu for support, but after a year, Zhuge Dan couldn't defend anymore, and his family was killed. Jing stayed in Wu and worked as an official there.
-Yan, after becoming the emperor, wanted to meet Jing again. Jing tried to hide but Yan forced Jing to meet him. Jing still held the resentment upon the Sima clan for killing his father and family, regret that he can't avenge them, because now Yan is already Jin emperor. Yan, feeling sad and ashamed, went out of the room. So while still remembering the friendship with Yan, he never wanted to meet Yan again and reject the official position that Yan give him, as he can't accept to serve two dynasties.
"we were friends before, why did everything have to be like this?..."
The only danger from words of loyal candor comes from not listening to them.
