Commander of the Week
Momir Vig, Simic Visionary
Before he built one of the most annoying Reanimator decks in EDH history, one of my Friends at my Group started out with this commander, and this is as almost as annoying. He seems pretty weak, at 2/2 for five mana with no other protective measures he can seemingly be dealt with quite easily. But unless done so quickly, he ramps board states out of control rapidly.
What’s in the Ooze today
The best way to build around Momir is to just fill it with creatures great and small. Preferably ones that are both green and blue at the same time and others that ramp, such as Sakura-Tribe Elder or Lotus Cobra. Prophet of Kruphix, Kruphix, God of Horizons and Seedborn Muse are must haves because they can increase the rate of ramp. Some creatures that I found were also very useful in such a deck include Cold-Eyed Selkie, Slippery Bogle and Shardless Agent, because they not only trigger both of Momir’s abilities but allow you to draw cards and cascade some of the smaller mana costs. Edric, Spymaster of Trest is another great card for this deck as it allows you to draw cards whenever a creature you control deals combat damage. Tehehe.
Ughhhh it’s a... Squashed Opponent
Unfortunately for the best results, this deck loves that dreaded Deadeye Navigator/Palinchron Combo. Suffice to say I won’t be putting that annoyingly overused combo in this deck. I found that a great way to slaughter several opponents at once is to ramp into Genesis Wave or Primal Surge. if the amount paid for Genesis Wave is high enough you will surely hit your Craterhoof Behemoth which will hopefully enter after a big clump of creatures and ramp your damage step off the chart. Champion of Lambholt is another great creature to have because, if its power is high enough, there are few ways to stop that massive horde of creatures.
Also from the Vat...
This deck needs creatures to run. Although even if they are countered they still trigger Momir’s Abilities, You still need them to defend yourself and trigger other abilities such as the Champion of Lambholt. Fear not, there are a vast array of counter spells in these colours. Leyline of Lifeforce is a good way to stop creature spells being countered, but it also stops theirs from being countered. Asceticism is another way to protect them when they are in play. Mystic Snake and Glen Elendra Archmage were creatures that I found very annoying and they both work well with Cloudstone Curio. Venser, Shaper Savant is an often unexpected method of stopping spells temporarily. Birthing Pod and Evolutionary Leap are good ways of cycling through the deck when Momir isn’t home too
And Finally...
Momir Vig would not be my first choice for these colours (Probably Kruphix or Edric) but he still makes a pretty unpleasant commander with the right cards. Lands could include Novijen, Heart of Progress, Boseiju, Who Shelters All, Alchemist’s Refuge and Halimar Depths as well as the relevant shocks and fetches. I know there are far better ideas for this guy out there with that horrific combo in it, but I do hope you find this helpful and Happy deck Building.
